The present invention is directed to the functionalization of butyl rubber ionomer and optionally the grafting of polyamide to halobutyl rubber ionomers. Specifically, disclosed are methods and products resulting therefrom for creating functionalized ionomers and grafting polyamide to halobutyl ionomers via reactive extrusion. The process comprises reacting a halobutyl polymer with at least one nitrogen and/or phosphorous based nucleophile to provide a halobutyl ionomer comprising conjugated diene units; grafting of an amine-reactive dienophile to said ionomer to form a functionalized ionomer; and optionally blending the resulting functionalized ionomer with polyamide.

The present invention relates to a method to control a liquid feed stream carried out by measuring at least one spectrum of the liquid feed stream comprising an initiator or catalyst, determining its activity using a predictive model on the basis of said spectrum and adjusting the feed streams and/or the preparation conditions of the feed stream comprising the initiators or catalysts in order to attain or maintain a desired level of total activity. In a further aspect the invention relates to a controlled process for the preparation of polymers in a polymerization reactor by contacting liquid feed streams comprising monomers and initiators or catalysts, whereby the control of the feed streams entering the polymerization reactor and/ or the initiator or catalyst preparation is carried out by measuring at least one spectrum of the liquid feed stream comprising an initiator or catalyst, determining its activity using a predictive model on the basis of said spectrum and adjusting the feed streams and/or the preparation conditions of the feed stream comprising the initiators or catalysts in order to attain or maintain a desired level of total activity within the polymerization reactor. More particularly, the invention relates to a method for controlling the activity of aluminium containing initiators in a process for the co-polymerisation of isolefins and multiolefins, in particular isobutylene and isoprene. The invention relates to an energy efficient, environmentally favourable process for the preparation of brominated rubbers, in particular bromobutyl rubber, that uses a common medium for both solution polymerization and subsequent bromination of the rubber and which further exhibits an enhanced bromine usage due to the use of a oxidizing agent. More particularly, the invention relates to a process that employs a common aliphatic medium for both solution polymerization and bromination of rubber in the presence of a brominating agent and an oxidizing agent with intermediate removal of un-reacted monomers.

A process for preparing butyl rubber involves that the mixture of iso-monoolefin, conjugated diene and diluent together with the mixture of initiator and diluent is fed into the hypergravity reactor in a specific proportion to carry out the cationic polymerization in the hypergravity field. After the reaction is completed,the product is seperated from the monmer and the diluent. The resulting butyl rubber has a number average molecular weight between 80000 and 300000. The polydispersity (Mw/Mn) of the butyl rubber is in the range of from 1.9 to 3.6.
