A method of pulping wastepaper includes providing a pulping vessel with a rotor and at least one flow sensor to measure slurry flow within the pulping vessel. The pulping vessel is charged a slurry (wastepaper and water), the amounts of wastepaper and water being such that the slurry has consistency in the range of from 10% to 30%. The wastepaper charge in the pulping vessel is pulped at a pre-selected power level while monitoring poloidal slurry flow; water may be added when the poloidal flow falls below a predetermined lower threshold flow value to reduce viscosity and restore poloidal flow within the pulping vessel. Doppler velocimetry is a preferred method of monitoring pulp flow. In a particularly preferred construction the rotor has a variable power drive. The inventive method is especially useful for making high quality, high brightness furnishes from wastepaper which varies from batch to batch.

A slurry the ligno-cellulosic feedstock is first provided, which is then subjected to a multi-step liquid removal process comprising draining by gravity at least a portion of the free liquid; removing a first portion of the capillary liquid in a low pressure zone by continuously compressing a stream of the ligno-cellulosic feedstock to reach a moisture content in a first target range; removing a second portion of the capillary liquid by shearing and compressing the ligno-cellulosic stream in a plug forming device, to form a ligno-cellulosic feedstock plug having a moisture content in a second target range at an outlet of the plug forming device connected to the high pressure zone. In the removal of the first portion of the capillary liquid, at least one first compression device continuously compresses the stream of the drained ligno-cellulosic feedstock to a first control pressure, while conveying the stream of the drained ligno-cellulosic feedstock in a flow direction of a belt filter press.

The gas surrounding the liquid filled fibers in the feed chamber is then pressurized to substantially above atmospheric pressure, and the fibers and the surrounding gas are discharged through another outlet (36) and passed through at least one venturi tube. A first venturi tube (52) may disintegrate bundles of fibers into parts, which are carried by a lower pressure gas flow (48) into a second venturi tube (56) splitting individual fibers longitudinally so as to open their lumen for further pulp treatment.

At the outlet to the passage, a conveyance member is provided to convey the cellulosic feedstock laterally across the outlet. The method comprises passing the cellulosic feedstock through an impregnation chamber to an outlet of the impregnation chamber; passing the cellulosic feedstock from the outlet of the impregnation chamber to an inlet of a holding tank; passing the cellulosic feedstock downwardly through the holding tank; maintaining a generally constant residence time in the holding tank; and subsequently subjecting the cellulosic feedstock to a hydrolysis process.

The invention relates to a feed system for a continuous digester where at least 2 pumps are arranged in parallel in the bottom of a pre-treatment vessel and where the transfer to the top of the digester takes place without a conventional top separator. The invention makes it possible to provide a feed system with an improved accessibility and operational reliability and being able to operate the main part of the pumps at optimal efficiency even if the production capacity is reduced.
