There is provided a sensor (10) for detecting that a structure (18) has been subjected to a strain overload condition, the sensor comprising: a transparent layer (12); and a first sensing element (14) coupled to the transparent layer. The sensor (10) is coupled to the surface of a structure (18) so that it experiences the same deformation as that of the corresponding surface of the structure upon mechanical loading of the structure. The first sensing element has a lower strain to failure value than the transparent layer, such that when a force is applied to the structure, the sensing element fails at a first strain and the transparent layer does not fail, causing a visible change in the appearance of the first sensing element through the fracture of the sensing element and de-bonding from the transparent layer.
