Abstract: PWM-frame rate misalignment is mitigated through implementation of a discrete variable refresh rate (VRR) scheme. A target frame rate is limited to a frame rate selected from only those frame rates that facilitate alignment of each frame period to a specified edge of a PWM cycle of a brightness control signal of a display panel. This alignment results in each frame period at the selected frame rate starting at a same point in a corresponding PWM cycle and ending at a same point in a corresponding PWM cycle to help ensure a constant effective duty cycle across each successive frame period, which in turn mitigates perception of flicker that otherwise would arise. Further, the discrete VRR scheme can employ a compensation mode for compensating for the delay in rendering or otherwise obtaining a frame for display so as to maintain a consistent duty cycle in the brightness control signal.

Abstract: An electronic device may include a display, and a processor operatively connected to the display. The processor is configured to identify a frame rate of a first application that is currently being executed. The processor is also configured to, based on the frame rate, determine a scanning rate of the display and a frame refresh rate for refreshing a frame related to the first application. The processor is further configured to control a first screen refresh of the first application, based on the scanning rate and the frame refresh rate.

Abstract: Embodiments relate to a display device with reduced scanning time by using a reference line separate from a data line to improve frame rate of the display device. A first pixel in a first row samples a reference voltage during a first period and samples a data voltage during a second period. A second pixel in a second row adjacent to the first row samples the reference voltage during a third period and samples the data voltage during a fourth period, where the third period overlaps with at least a portion of the second period. The reference voltage is provided by the reference line that is connected to a reference buffer, and the data voltage is provided by the data line connected to a source driver circuit.
