    Abstract: An anti-theft device (100) is fitted to a vehicle in order to prevent theft thereof by immobilising a driveshaft (51) of the vehicle downstream of a power plant. To this end, a friction clamp (52) is concentrically received around the driveshaft (51) thereby frictionally to engage a periphery of the driveshaft (51) when in a locked position. The device (100) includes an electrical motor (53) which is coupled to the clamp by way of a screw-threaded rod (54) and a pair of jaws (55). The jaws comprise a screw-follower (55.1) which meshes with the screw-threaded rod and a proximal jaw (55.2). The clamp (52) is moved from an open position in which the driveshaft is permitted to rotate relative to the clamp to its locked position in which it engages the driveshaft. An ECU controls engagement of the clamp depending upon a position of a handbrake and ignition switch.
