Abstract: A battery assembly (10) may include a battery housing (14) and a battery vent assembly (18) having an expanded metal filter collar (24) which acts as a heat sink to cool an overheating battery. Further the vent assembly acts as a particulate filter and flame arrestor which prevents and/or reduces flames and particulate slag projectiles from being expelled outside an individual cell or bank of cells in a battery assembly (10). Directional Flow Expanded Metal (DFEM) and Variable Expanded Metal (VEM) utilize directional openings (40) offset in overlapping layers to create a centrifuge or cyclone effect for gases or particles passing through the filter. The openings are offset from layer to layer within the wrap of the collar filter and are designed to change the direction of the flames and burning particles relative to the input flame flow direction.

A cylindrical valve spool having a central passage is positioned within, and sealingly engaged with, the cylindrical passage. The valve spool is moveable along the axis among a first position wherein the inlet port is in fluid communication with the first outlet port but not the second outlet port, a second position wherein the inlet port is in fluid communication with the second outlet port but not the first outlet port, and an intermediate position between the first and second positions wherein the inlet port is in fluid communication with both of the first and second outlet ports.
