    Abstract: A satellite having a longitudinally elongated body and being capable of operating in the thermosphere. The satellite can be powered by an electric rocket engine, and includes a remote sensing system configured to obtain images of Earth. An elongated axis about which the elongated body extends can be generally aligned with a forward direction of the satellite, with a viewing angle from the satellite oriented transverse to the elongated axis. A center of mass of the satellite can be forward of a center of drag to produce positive natural stability. The remote sensing system, which can be part of a payload, can include a movable mirror and one or more movable optical elements. A first mirror can be pivoted, and/or other optical elements, including the payload, can be rotated about the axis of the elongated body. Counter-acting masses can be used to null motion of the movable components.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus adapted to survey a predetermined characteristic within a body of fluid adjacent an axis that transects the body of fluid, the apparatus comprising: a survey member interposed between first and second position defining arrangements; and at least one instrumentality associated with the survey member, each instrumentality adapted to survey the predetermined characteristic of the body of fluid adjacent the axis, wherein a survey of the predetermined characteristic is conducted over a predetermined time period. The present invention provides a method of surveying a predetermined characteristic within a body of fluid adjacent an axis that transects the body of fluid, the method comprising the steps of: deploying into a body of fluid at least one apparatus according to the first aspect of the invention; and obtaining survey data of the predetermined characteristic from one or more of the instrumentalities over the predetermined time period. The present invention also provides methods of determining whether a potentially suitable site is a suitable site for operative location of a fluid-based electricity generator, and other related methods.

    Abstract: The embodiments herein relate to sensors having reactive filter materials for detecting analytes in wellbores. The sensor includes at least one reactive filter material arranged in a flow line, wherein the reactive filter material sorbs an analyte in a wellbore fluid in the flow line; and at least one detector that detects a sorption signal specific to the analyte at at least a first location and a second location of the reactive filter material, wherein the first location is upstream in the flow line relative to the second location. The detector either (1) calculates a balanced measurement corresponding to the presence of the analyte in the wellbore or (2) relays the measurements to a signal processing unit to calculate a balanced measurement corresponding to the presence of the analyte in the wellbore.
