A satellite having a longitudinally elongated body and being capable of operating in the thermosphere. The satellite can be powered by an electric rocket engine, and includes a remote sensing system configured to obtain images of Earth. An elongated axis about which the elongated body extends can be generally aligned with a forward direction of the satellite, with a viewing angle from the satellite oriented transverse to the elongated axis. A center of mass of the satellite can be forward of a center of drag to produce positive natural stability. The remote sensing system, which can be part of a payload, can include a movable mirror and one or more movable optical elements. A first mirror can be pivoted, and/or other optical elements, including the payload, can be rotated about the axis of the elongated body. Counter-acting masses can be used to null motion of the movable components.

Provided is a device configured to determine a power capacity of a battery of a vehicle, predict a first set of values indicative of amounts of power to be stored during a time interval by the battery, the power being generated by a renewable energy generator carried by the vehicle, and predict a second set of values indicative of amounts of energy to be consumed from the battery during the time interval based on previous energy consumption by the vehicle. The device is also configured to determine a score based on the power capacity, the first set of values, and the second set of values. The system is also configured to determine whether the score satisfies a threshold and, in response to a determination that the score satisfies the threshold, activate an internal combustion engine to charge to the battery.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zum Detektieren von Primärgasströmungen (18) in Strömungsräumen (10), wobei das in einem Strömungsraum (10) strömende Primärgas (18) lokal mit einer Impfsubstanz beimpft und deren Bewegung repräsentativ für die Strömung des Primärgases (18) mittels eines Bilddetektors (28) mit vorgeschalteter Abbildungsoptik (30) bildgebend detektiert wird. Die Erfindung zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass als Impfsubstanz ein sich relativbewegungsfrei mit dem Primärgas (18) mitbewegendes Gasgemisch (34) verwendet wird, welches einen von dem Primärgas (18) unterscheidbaren Brechungsindex aufweist, und die bildgebende Detektion mittels eines Hintergrund-Schlierenmessverfahrens erfolgt.

The present invention provides an apparatus adapted to survey a predetermined characteristic within a body of fluid adjacent an axis that transects the body of fluid, the apparatus comprising: a survey member interposed between first and second position defining arrangements; and at least one instrumentality associated with the survey member, each instrumentality adapted to survey the predetermined characteristic of the body of fluid adjacent the axis, wherein a survey of the predetermined characteristic is conducted over a predetermined time period. The present invention provides a method of surveying a predetermined characteristic within a body of fluid adjacent an axis that transects the body of fluid, the method comprising the steps of: deploying into a body of fluid at least one apparatus according to the first aspect of the invention; and obtaining survey data of the predetermined characteristic from one or more of the instrumentalities over the predetermined time period. The present invention also provides methods of determining whether a potentially suitable site is a suitable site for operative location of a fluid-based electricity generator, and other related methods.

The invention relates to a luminescence-based colorimetric sensor formulation and method of use thereof. The sensor formulation can be used to assess oxygen concentration, particularly in controlled oxygen atmospheres such as food packaging. In embodiments, the invention also relates to sensor-containing laminate films for food packaging, and methods of their preparation.

The embodiments herein relate to sensors having reactive filter materials for detecting analytes in wellbores. The sensor includes at least one reactive filter material arranged in a flow line, wherein the reactive filter material sorbs an analyte in a wellbore fluid in the flow line; and at least one detector that detects a sorption signal specific to the analyte at at least a first location and a second location of the reactive filter material, wherein the first location is upstream in the flow line relative to the second location. The detector either (1) calculates a balanced measurement corresponding to the presence of the analyte in the wellbore or (2) relays the measurements to a signal processing unit to calculate a balanced measurement corresponding to the presence of the analyte in the wellbore.

A system and method for Displacement Current Phase Tomography. The present system invention obtains a linear relationship between mutual displacement current from a sensor (output current of the measuring electrode terminals) and the area (or volume) of an object to be imaged in the imaging domain. The system uses capacitance sensors and utilizes the phase of the measured current, in addition to the amplitude, to reconstruct an image.

A device for accurate wind measurement includes a bench carrying a camera having camera optics and a moving object connected to the camera by a string. The camera is generally directed downward and takes images of the object's movement while influenced by gravity and aerodynamic forces and is configured to stream the images to a digital signal processor or computer, which is adapted to decode the images and compute the object location and spatial angles.
