Described are methods and means for enhancing enzyme activity toward insoluble substrates. This is achieved by means of in vitro compartmentalization in which an insoluble microparticle functions both as the enzyme substrate and as a structure for negative selection. Enhanced enzymes expressed from a microparticle-linked polynucleotide library preferentially degrade the microparticle releasing specific gene variants into solution. Gene variants encoding less active enzyme variants remain linked to the microparticle and may be removed through centrifugation, thus enriching the polynucleotide library for more active enzyme variants. These methods may be used to enhance cellulase and ligninase activity toward insoluble cellulosic biomass.

A process for preparing a surface of a material that is not bondable to make it bondable to the surface of another material. A non-bondable surface of a semiconductor wafer is treated with oxygen plasma to oxidize the surface of the wafer and make the surface smoother, hydrophilic and bondable to the surface of another substrate, such as a glass substrate. The semiconductor wafer may have a barrier layer thereon formed of a material, such as SixNy or SiNxOy that is not bondable to another substrate, such as a glass substrate. For these neat powder, a solution of a chosen energetic material is prepared in an aprotic solvent and later combined with liquid hexane that is miscible with such solvent. The energetic material chosen is less soluble in the liquid hexane than in the aprotic solvent and the liquid hexane is cooled to a temperature that is below that of the solvent solution. In order to form a precipitate of said neat powders, the solvent solution is rapidly combined with the liquid hexane. When the resulting precipitate is collected, it may be dried and filtered to yield an energetic nanopowder material.

Blood containing non-infected red blood cells is circulated back to the patient. The device application is not limited to the treatment of malaria and includes other blood related diseases that affect the magnetic properties of a patient's red blood cells.

Forming an embedded electronic component includes attaching an electronic component to a first conductive layer and forming a layer stack with a first partially cured dielectric layer having a first opening and a substrate having a second opening. The partially cured dielectric layer is located over the first conductive layer and the substrate is located over the first partially cured dielectric layer such that the first and second openings surround the electronic component. Heat and pressure are applied to the layer stack such that the first partially cured dielectric layer flows for filling gaps within the first and second openings and becomes fully cured.

Disclosed is a technology of discharging, from a drug cartridge, a drug instructed to discharge, while managing a plurality of drugs stored in a drug cartridge. The technology makes it possible to correctly discharge the drugs even when the dosing order of the drugs is changed. A medical agent dispenser has: a main body case (1); an annular drug cartridge (2) which is housed in the main body case (1) and has a plurality of holders (3) at equal intervals in the longitudinal direction; a discharge mechanism (7) which discharges the drugs from the holders (3); and an input interface (6) which receives operations of leading the drug to be discharged. Based on the number of operations the input interface (6) has received, gears (4a, 4b), i.e., rotating mechanisms which rotationally transfer the drug cartridge (2), are controlled.
