One way to improve fuel efficiency of a vehicle is to detect the vehicle operational shortcomings related to fuel consumption by determining whether fuel used during operation of the vehicle is normal fuel use or wasted fuel use. Considerations of idling, speeding and inappropriate gear shifts are some ways to measure the amount of fuel wasted due to operator shortcomings. After the control section of a printer (liquid discharge apparatus) discharges ink on the basis of a print job, the control section waits for an input of the next print job while causing the discharge section to perform flushing. If the next print job is input before the elapsed time Te from the end of the ink discharge on the basis of the print job exceeds the waiting time Tw, the control section causes ink to be discharged on the basis of the next print job. On the other hand, if the next print job is not input before the elapsed time Te exceeds the waiting time Tw, the control section causes the cap to be subjected to capping.

A three-dimensional printer effects color changes in an extrudate using a color-application unit applying a colorant to the interior of a filament before it is melted within an extruder. Specifically, the color-application unit may receive a filament (or portions thereof) having an exposed interior surface, where color applicators are actuated to apply one or more colors to the interior surface of the filament in order to modify the extruded color. The filament may then be coupled, collapsed, or otherwise closed about the interior surface, e.g., by a mechanical coupler, to substantially enclose the interior surface of the filament, which is then fed to the extruder for fabricating a colored object in a three-dimensional fabrication process. By enclosing the colored surface within the filament before melting for extrusion, transition effects of a color change can be mitigated and transition time for a substantially complete change in color can be significantly reduced.

Biological activity in holding pens in a micro-fluidic device can be assayed by placing in the holding pens capture objects that bind a particular material of interest produced by the biological activity. The biological material of interest that binds to each capture object can then be assessed, either in the micro-fluidic device or after exporting the capture object from the micro-fluidic device. The assessment can be utilized to characterize the biological activity in each holding pen. The biological activity can be production of the biological material of interest. Thus, the biological activity can correspond to or arise from one or more biological cells. Biological cells within a holding pen can be clonal cell colonies. The biological activity of each clonal cell colony can be assayed while maintaining the clonal status of each colony.

An exercise device (100) is supportable by a swivel mount (116) attached to a karabiner (114) and the swivel mount is arranged to lock under load at 90° increments. The device includes a rotatable reel (103) arranged to have a pair of inelastic straps (113a, 113b) rotationally wound thereabout from opposite directions. The reel is rotatable in conjunction with a locking mechanism consisting of a toothed sprocket wheel (104) secured to the reel and a manually operable slideable shaft (106) that is located within a barrel (107). Slots (136, 139) in the shaft and barrel, respectively, permit rotational movement of the sprocket wheel and, hence, reel (103) so that the straps (113a, 113b) may have their length altered against the bias of a coil spring unit (111). Translational movement of the shaft (106) within the barrel (107) causes the full diameter of the shaft (106) to engage between adjacent teeth of the sprocket wheel to lock the reel (103), thereby preventing further adjustment of the straps (113a, 113b). When the reel is released for rotational movement, so pulling on one or both of the straps against the bias of the spring unit causes the straps to be unwound evenly and reducing the pulling force below that of the spring unit causes the straps to be rotationally wound around the reel from opposite directions.

A particle beam irradiation apparatus radiates a particle beam plural times per one irradiation position. A storage unit stores a dose to be radiated each of the times (divisional target dose). A dose monitor measures the dose of the particle beam radiated to the irradiation position. At the first time of radiation, a controller outputs an interruption signal when the dose measured by the dose monitor reaches the divisional target dose. The dose monitor measures a dose (excessive dose) radiated after the interruption signal is outputted until the particle beam is actually interrupted. Then, it is defined: Corrected Dose value=Divisional Target Dose−Excessive Dose Value. Instead, it may be defined: Corrected Dose value=Divisional Target Dose−Excessive Dose Estimation Value. At the second time of radiation, the controller outputs an interruption signal when the dose measured by the dose monitor reaches the corrected dose value.

The present invention, referred to as Oasis is Automated Statistical Inference for Segmentation (OASIS), is a fully automated and robust statistical method for cross-sectional MS lesion segmentation. Using intensity information from multiple modalities of MRI, a logistic regression model assigns voxel-level probabilities of lesion presence. The OASIS model produces interpretable results in the form of regression coefficients that can be applied to imaging studies quickly and easily. OASIS uses intensity-normalized brain MRI volumes, enabling the model to be robust to changes in scanner and acquisition sequence. OASIS also adjusts for intensity inhomogeneities that preprocessing bias field correction procedures do not remove, using BLUR volumes. This allows for more accurate segmentation of brain areas that are highly distorted by inhomogeneities, such as the cerebellum. One of the most practical properties of OASIS is that the method is fully transparent, easy to implement, and simple to modify for new data sets.

A physiological monitoring system may receive a sensor signal from a physiological sensor. The system may determine a first and second change metric based on the sensor signal, and may determine a venous signal based on the change metrics. In some embodiments, the sensor signal may be a photoplethysmograph signal that includes both arterial and venous information. By subtracting a second change metric from a first change metric, arterial contributions may be substantially removed, resulting in a signal primarily comprising venous information. A wireless telecommunications network supplies a semi-persistent resource that a wireless station can use for special purposes (such as a retransmission of packets for ARQ purposes or a control signal. The semi-persistent resource can be allocated by the system to other terminals if, e.g., a retransmission is not required. Since a retransmission is generally performed in response to a NACK received from a base station, the NACK may itself serve as a token that permits the wireless station to use the semi-persistent allocation. Thus, the technology includes, e.g., a method for resource allocation on a semi-persistent basis and efficient signaling for the usage of such allocation.
