The disclosure generally pertains to minimizing battery power consumption while employing local wireless communication to activate an operation of an autonomous vehicle. In an example implementation, a vehicle controller of an autonomous vehicle transitions to a powered-down state after the autonomous vehicle is parked at a parking spot that lacks cellular communication coverage. The vehicle controller may transition to a powered-up state at a scheduled time to execute an autonomous operation based on a directive stored in a cloud-based device. In no directive has been stored, the vehicle controller wakes up periodically in a partially powered-up state and transmits a query in a local wireless communications format to the cloud-based device to check for a directive. If no directive is present, the vehicle controller transitions back to the powered-down state. If a directive is present, the vehicle controller transitions to a fully powered-up state to execute the autonomous operation.

A robot collision avoidance motion optimization technique using a distance field constraint function. CAD or sensor data depicting obstacles in a robot workspace are converted to voxels, and a three-dimensional binary matrix of voxel occupancy is created. A corresponding distance map matrix is then computed, where each cell in the distance map matrix contains a distance to a nearest occupied cell. The distance map matrix is used as a constraint function in a motion planning optimization problem, where the optimization problem is convexified and then iteratively solved to yield a robot motion profile which avoids the obstacles and minimizes an objective function such as distance traveled. The distance field optimization technique is quickly computed and has a computation time which is independent of the number of obstacles. The disclosed optimization technique is easy to set up, as it requires no creation of geometry primitives to approximate robot and obstacle shapes.

Disclosed are systems and methods for achieving a smooth transition in the grip force when the wrist jaws transition between the position and force mode. In the position mode, the desired jaw angle is above a threshold corresponding to an angle at which both jaws are just simultaneously in contact with an object held between the jaws or, if there is no object, when the jaws begin to touch each other. A feedback loop may determine that the jaws are transitioning between the modes based on changes of the desired jaw angle. The feedback loop may analyze the commanded grip force and the measured grip force to determine whether to adjust the commanded grip force during the transition. If so, the feedback loop may adjust the commanded grip force to reduce changes in the measured grip force that is otherwise based on the desired jaw angle.
