A liquid level detecting device which can be used for various detection objects and application environments regardless of detection objects, emits light to a liquid level detecting portion efficiently, can detect sensitively variations in quantity of light by a light receiving means, and is excellent in durability, easy to produce and practically applicable, and which comprises a shielding means (14) for preventing light from a light emitting means (12) from directly being applied to a light receiving means (13), and a light scattering means (16) for scattering light from the light emitting means to radiate part of the scattered light to the outside by a liquid level detecting portion above a light radiating means (light transmitting member) (11) and to receive non−radiated and reflected portion of the scattered light by the light receiving means to thereby detect a change in quantity of received light. Accordingly, when liquid (17) is present outside, quantity of light reflected at the interface between the liquid and the light radiating means and returning to the inside of the light radiating means decreases and therefore quantity of received light at the light receiving means decreases also, whereby it is possible to detect a liquid level by measuring a change in quantity of received light.

The present invention aims at attaining a liquid surface level detecting apparatus, which can be used in various detection targets and usage environments without selecting a detection target, can efficiently irradiate a light to a liquid surface level detecting unit and detect a variation in a light reception amount of a light receiving means at a high sensibility, and can be excellent in durability, easy to manufacture, and be actually used. By placing a light shielding means 14 so as not to directly irradiate the light from a light emitting means 12 to a light receiving means 13, the light from the light emitting means is scattered by an optically scattering means 16, and a part of that scattering light is radiated to an outside by the liquid surface level detecting unit on a light radiating means (an optically transmitting member) 11. On the other hand, the scattering light, which is reflected without being radiated, is received by the light receiving means, and the change in that light reception amount is detected. Consequently, if a liquid 17 exists in the outside, a light amount, which is reflected by a boundary between the liquid and the light radiating means and returned to an inside of the light radiating means, is reduced, and the light reception amount in the light receiving means is also reduced. Thus, by measuring the change in the light reception amount, it is possible to detect a liquid surface level of the liquid.

The prism configuration relied upon for sensed response to the presence of immersing liquid (as compared to air) is a solid region having an exterior profile which includes a downwardly convergent conical surface portion at least at spaced locales which are at equal but opposite offset from the cylindrical body axis, wherein the geometric apex angle of downward convergence is 90 degrees. As long as a given prism is exposed to air, a large amount of light is transmitted (by reflection within the prism) from a transmission optical fiber to a receiving optical fiber. But when immersed in a liquid, a portion of the light from the transmitting fiber is refracted into the liquid, resulting in a clearly detectable decrease in the amount of light coupled to the receiving fiber.
