A sea water cooling system including a first fluid cooling loop coupled to a first side of a heat exchanger and to a thermal load, a second fluid cooling loop coupled to a second side of the heat exchanger and including a pump for circulating fluid through the second fluid cooling loop, and a controller operatively connected to the pump, wherein the controller is configured to monitor an actual temperature in the first fluid cooling loop and to adjust a speed of the pump based on the monitored temperature to achieve a predetermined temperature in the first fluid cooling loop. The system may be selectively operable in one of a plurality of operating modes accordance, wherein in a first operating mode the pump is operated based entirely on cooling demands of the thermal load, and in a second operating mode the pump is operated to maintain a fluid pressure above a predefined pressure.

A system and method are disclosed for monitoring and controlling a positive displacement pump using readings obtained from a plurality of pressure sensors. The pressure sensors may be mounted at the suction, discharge and interstage regions of the pump. Signals from the pressure sensors are compared to obtain a ratio that is used to predict whether a cavitation condition exists within the pump. The ratio can be compared to user provided limits to change an operating characteristic of the pump to reduce predicted cavitation. The pump may be stopped, or pump speed changed, when the ratio is less than a predetermined value. In some embodiments, historical information regarding the ratio may be used to obtain standard deviation information which may then be used to predict whether gas bubbles are passing through the pump. A new remote control cable (11) has a core (39) with a jacket (43) made of nylon 12 having polytetrafluoroethylene as a constituent. The "gap" between the cable core (39) and the cable conduit (45) is decreased compared to corresponding prior art cables and the thickness of the core jacket (43) is about three times that of corresponding prior art cables. Core column strength is about doubled. The cable (11) is equipped with a new dynamic sealing device (10) made of a thermoplastic polyurethane. Such device (10) has a pair of sealing ridges (69, 71) of differing diameter which bear against a rod (37a) moving with respect to the cable conduit (45). The outer ridge (69) excludes airborne contaminants and the inner ridge (71) retains a synthetic lubricant (53).

The method may further include the steps of comparing the actual operating parameters to predefined system and pump limits to determine a second actuator control signal Y′c, comparing the actual operating parameters to predefined fluid limits to determine a third actuator control signal Y″c, comparing the actual operating parameters to predefined normal processing limits to determine a fourth actuator control signal Y′″c, and comparing the actual operating parameters to at least one predefined abnormal processing limit to determine a fifth actuator control signal Y″″c. The method may further include determining which of the actuator control signals is a most conservative actuator control signal, and driving the pump in accordance with the most conservative actuator control signal.
