A novel spin resonance microscope is disclosed, the microscope design comprising an integrated evanescent wave probe and scanning tunneling microscope tip. The probe and tip may be either the same structure, or they may be separate structures. The integrated design allows for coherent excitation of precessing electron spin states in the sample such that spin resonance may be detected because the tunneling current is modulated by the spin resonance. Spin resonance may be affected by either adjacent nuclei, or by adjacent electrons. The present apparatus requires significantly reduced power inputs, such that the dead time of the system is short, and relaxation phenomena may be evaluated without swamping the instrument's electronics.

Various embodiments include a fiber optic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensor tool device and systems. One such tool includes a permanent magnet that generates a static magnetic field. A transmit antenna in the tool can operate to transmit a time-varying signal that is orthogonal to the static magnetic field. A fiber optic sensor element includes a coating that phase modulates a light signal traveling in the fiber when the coating is exposed to a varying field (e.g., a received, reflected magnetic field corresponding to the transmitted time-varying signal). The coating may be one of a magnetostrictive coating or a piezoelectric coating. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

A nanodiamond particle including an NV center having ODMR intensity enhanced, of which surface is modified with a functional group containing a heteroatom, is provided. This nanodiamond particle as being chemically modified can serve for a fluorescent molecular probe which can be made use of in a biological system. By tracking a rotational motion of the NV center included in this fluorescent molecular probe, structural change of a protein can be analyzed in real time. The functional group containing a heteroatom can be at least any functional group of a hydroxyl group and a hydroxyalkyl group, or a carboxyl group.
