This invention relates to a helmet mounted display system of the kind comprising: a helmet having a transparent spherical visor (5) and an optical system (1, 7) which directs rays of light from a display produced by a display source (1) onto the visor to provide by reflection at the visor, at a helmet wearer's eye position (7), a collimated virtual image of the display on a line of sight of a wearer of the helmet through the visor.
In order to facilitate adjustment of the eye position with respect to the helmet the visor is rotationally symmetrical about an axis about which the optical system is rotatable.
The visor is preferably also rotationally symmetric about a second axis about which the visor is arranged to be rotatable between inoperative and operative positions.
The invention finds particular application to binocular helmet mounted display systems, the two optical systems being then suitably arranged to be rotated relatively about a common axis with a scissors action, thereby to vary the spacing between the eye positions of the two display systems.

A drop marking nozzle has a housing defining an ink cavity having at least two fluid chambers (23a;23b/c) which are dimensioned such that one fluid chamber (23b/c) has a characteristic fluid resonant frequency R₁ below the operating frequency f₀ of a stimulation voltage supplied by a transducer means for causing drop formation and the other fluid chamber (23a) has a characteristic fluid resonant frequency R₂ above the operating frequency f₀. The resonant frequencies R₁ and R₂ are sufficiently close together that the magnitude of the stimulation voltage at an anti-resonance frequency AR therebetween is drivable by the transducer means. A robust operating region is defined between the resonant frequencies R₁ and R₂ to enable substantially satellite free drop formation between a fast satellite threshold (10) and a foldback threshold (12) thereby facilitating high resolution ink jet printing and also providing a more robust operating region which tolerate variations of the stimulation voltage, temperature variation and variation in the composition and/or characteristic of the ink.

An arrangement for protecting an integrated circuit device (11) against latch up during a nuclear event comprising a capacitance (15) and a switch (17) connected in parallel across the power supply lines (13) of the device. When the power supply lines are connected to a power supply (19) the capacitance (15) stores energy sufficient to supply necessary operating currents to the device (11) during its normal operation. The switch (17) is arranged so that, under a transient gamma pulse incident thereon during a nuclear event, its impedance is set to a low value at such a rate that the energy stored by the capacitance is discharged through the switch and the voltage applied to the device (11) via the power supply lines is pulled down to such a level and at such a rate as to prevent transient gamma pulse induced latch-up in the device (11).

Water and soapy lubricants are removed by an air knife assembly (26) from an area of a container (12) which is to be marked with a code by drop marking equipment (14). Each air knife (26) is positioned at appropriate pitch, roll and yaw angles to remove water only from the area which is to be drop marked, thereby avoiding damage to labels which have been applied, but not yet bonded, to the container (12). The dewatering ensures the proper marking of the product. The angular orientation of each air knife (26) may comprise a yaw angle of about 64° relative to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor, a pitch angle of about 25° from the horizontal, and a roll angle of about 52°.
