A polymerization process for preparing a silica-filled butyl rubber polymer. A quaternary onium ion substituted silaceous nanoclay is dispersed in the organic polymerization fluid prior to polymerization of an isoolefin monomer and a multiolefin monomer in the fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymer comprises butyl rubber intercalated with silica from the silaceous nanoclay. The rate of polymerization is substantially unaffected by addition of the nanoclay to the polymerization fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymers exhibit improved impermeability as compared with non-filled polymers.

The invention relates to nanocomposites and processes for making nanocomposites comprising butyl rubber ionomers having at least 3.5 mol% of repeating units derived from a multiolefin monomer, such as isoprene. More particularly, the invention relates to butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites comprising high aspect ratio fillers. In one preferred aspect of the invention, the nanocomposites comprise ionomers that are generated in situ during formation of the nanocomposite, leading to intercalation of the ionomer with the nanocomposite. Nanocomposites according to the present invention exhibit improved impermeability and tensile properties as compared with prior art nanocomposites made using conventional brominated butyl rubber.

The invention relates to peroxide cured thermoplastic vulcanizates comprising a thermoplastic and an isomonoolefin-multiolefin elastomer, such as butyl rubber. More particularly, the invention relates to peroxide cured thermoplastic vulcanizates wherein the elastomer comprises at least 3.5 mol% of multiolefin in order to facilitate peroxide curing. The thermoplastic vulcanizates according to the present invention are useful in the preparation of shaped articles for high purity applications, such as condenser caps, medical components and fuel cell components.

A method to halogenate butyl rubber in the absence of water and, more particularly, without the need for addition of neutralization agents. The butyl rubber contains at least 4.1 mol% of a multi-olefin and the multi-olefin serves as a sink for the hydrohalic Brönsted acids generated when a halogenation agent is added. This obviates the need for aqueous phase acid neutralization. The novel halogenated butyl rubber produced using the method advantageously possesses a high degree of desirable exo-allylic bromides with relatively low levels of the less desirable endo-allylic bromides.

The present invention is also directed to a peroxide curable rubber composition containing a butyl polymer an EP(D)M rubber polymer, and a 1,2-polybutadiene polymer. Shaped articles made from the compositions find use as containers for pharmaceuticals, a condenser cap, a seal for fuel cells, a container containing electrolytes, rings, dampening devices, seals and sealants.
