The invention relates to optically active high-molecular compounds represented by the structural formula (1) and stationary-phase materials containing the same. The high-molecular compounds exhibit optical activity by virtue of their stacking helical structures wherein the aromatic groups are distorted, thus being useful as optically active stationary phases for HPLC or polarized-light absorbers. In the formula (1), Ar is an aromatic ring; R and R are each hydrogen or an organic group; R and R are each a substituent; n is an integer of 2 or above; X is -(CH2)m-, an aromatic group, a vinyl group, a heteroatom, or a heteroatom-containing group; and m is an integer of 0 or above, with the proviso that the compound may have two to four R s and/or two to four R s which may be each the same or different from each other.

A method of producing a cyclic olefin polymer having a polar functional group and a high molecular weight with a high yield in which a catalyst is not deactivated due to polar functional groups, moisture and oxygen is provided. A ccording to the olefin polymerization method, deactivation of a catalyst due to polar functional groups of monomers can be prevented, and thus a polyolefin having a high molecular weight can be prepared with a high yield, and the ratio of catalyst to monomer can be less than 1/5000 due to good activity of the catalyst, and thus removal of catalyst residues is not required.

Synergistic combinations of the polymer with (1) diesters or polyesters of a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, or (2) oxybenzone enhance the photostability of sunscreen compositions containing a photodegradable sunscreen active compound, such as avobenzone.

The invention relates to powder coating suspensions (powder slurries) and powder coatings. The powder slurries can be produced by:1) emulsifying at least one liquid component containing at least one liquid source product in an aqueous medium, resulting in an aqueous emulsion of watery particles; 2) cooling the emulsion in order to form a suspension of dimensionally stable particles. The powder coatings can be produced by:1) emulsifying at least one liquid component containing at least one liquid source product in an aqueous medium, resulting in an aqueous emulsion of watery particles; 2) cooling the emulsion in order to form a suspension of dimensionally stable particles and subsequently 3) isolating said dimensionally stable particles. At least one emulsifying agent is used which contains an aqueous solution having a surface tension of >30 mN/m in the critical micelle formation concentration (CMC).The invention also relates to a method for producing said powder coating suspensions (powder slurries) and powder coatings in addition to the use thereof in coating, adhesive and sealant materials, or the use thereof in producing said coating, adhesive and sealant materials.

There is disclosed a process for producing a styrenic polymer or copolymer each having syndiotactic configuration which comprises polymerizing a styrenic monomer represented by the general formula (I)
such as phenylstyrene and trimethylsilylstyrene, or copolymerizing at least two styrenic monomers of the formula (I) or at least one styrenic monomer of the formula (I) with at least one styrenic monomer other than the styrenic monomer of the formula (I) in the presence of a catalyst comprising as principal ingredients (A) a transition metal compound derived from a group IVB metal of the Periodic Table such as pentamethylcyclopen- tadienyltrimethyltitanium and (B) a compound producing an ionic complex by the reaction with the above transition metal compound such as tri(n-butyl)ammonium tetra(pentafluorophenyl)borate. The aforementioned process enables efficient production of a styrenic polymer or copolymer excellent in heat resistance and mechanical strength.
