Electrical impedance detector for measurement of physical quantities, in particular of temperature. The detector comprises electrodes (11,14), between which the electrical impedance (C;R) that represents the physical quantity to be measured is measured. Between these electrodes (11,14) there is an active material whose impedance properties are a function of the physical quantity to be measured. The active material of the detector is a very thin thread-like glass or glass-ceramic fibre (10), which has been manufactured by means of the glass-drawing technique. Further, a process for the manufacture of said detectors is described.

A method of attaching leads (18) to a porous metal material (14) comprises the steps of: (a) mechanically and electrically contacting the porous metal material (14) with a first terminal means (24) for applying an electrical potential to the porous metal material (14); (b) providing adjacent the porous metal material (14) a lead (26) to be attached which is attached to a second terminal means for applying an electrical potential to the lead (26); (c) applying an electrical potential across the first terminal means (24) and the second terminal means; and, (d) applying a driving force (F) to the lead (26) sufficient to impact and continue to press against the porous metal material (14) sufficiently to complete an electrical circuit between the first terminal means (24) and the lead (26) through the porous metal material (14). The electrical potential and the driving force are sufficient to create a plasma (36) of the porous metal material adjacent the lead (26) and to fuse the lead (26) with the porous metal material (14). This technique is particularly useful in the production of capacitors (10).

A sintering press comprising a lower die (9), an upper die (23) and a furnace (5) surrounding the dies. At least one of the two dies (9, 23) is supported at its end face remote from the other die by a spherical bearing surface (13, 29) so that this die can adjust itself by tilting so that the centre lines of the two dies are no longer in line with each other. As a result, a uniform pressure distribution is obtained in the products to be pressed.
