A fuel rail damper (60) for use within the fuel rail (10) of an internal combustion engine includes a flexible tubular diaphragm (70) which extends along the center of the fuel rail. The distal end (80) of the tubular diaphragm is closed and the proximal end (90) of the tubular diaphragm is open and connected to a diagnostic fitting (100) at one end of the fuel rail. This fitting includes a diagnostic valve core and a cap (120) which permit external servicing. The diagnostic fitting is removable which permits the fitting to be easily installed or removed, thus facilitating replacement of the fitting, if necessary. The diagnostic fitting is sealed after the tubular diaphragm is pressurized to a pressure below the operating pressure within the fuel rail.

In a second feature of this invention, a locator function on the key fob (24) provides an indication of an approximate direction to a vehicle in a parking area. A transmitter, particularly useful for a remote keyless entry system, includes a less expensive oscillator. A strategy for compensating for tolerance variations caused by the less expensive components includes sending out a test signal with an expected signal profile. The test signal is then received and analyzed to compare it to the expected signal profile. Variations in timing characteristics of the signal compared to the expected characteristics are utilized to determine correction factors that are then programmed into a microprocessor of the transmitter so that subsequent signal transmissions will track an expected signal profile.

This invention also relates to a fuel injector seat and method of manufacturing the fuel injector seat, and a method of evaluating when the transition portion is required between the orifice and needle-sealing portions for a particular seat arrangement.

A spring clip for retaining together a fuel injector and a fuel rail cup includes first and second parallel spaced side walls and a third side wall resiliently connecting the first and second side walls to form a generally U-shaped body with an open side. The first and second parallel spaced side walls include flanges extending inwardly toward one another from opposed lower edges of the side walls. The flanges are configured to coact with an exterior surface of an associated fuel injector to locate the injector axially relative to the clip. The first and second parallel spaced side walls also include slots arranged to receive a flanged portion of the fuel rail cup such that the clip is located axially relative to the cup, thereby locating said injector axially relative to said cup. An aperture in the third side wall receives both a radially protruding orientation key of the injector and a corresponding orientation key of the fuel rail cup to fix the injector against rotational motion in the cup. Angled upper edges of the side walls and the side wall aperture allow the clip to be radially installed on the injector and to thereafter permit axial connection of the clip with the fuel rail cup when the injector inlet end is inserted into the cup. Alternatively, when the injector is assembled in the fuel rail cup, the clip may be snapped onto the assembly. In either case, the clip fixes the injector against axial and rotational movement relative to the fuel rail cup.

A flange structure (132) extends from the cylindrical section. A first passage in the cover structure is in open communication with atmosphere and in communication with the interior. The first passage (137) communicates with a connector opening (138) in the cover structure. The first passage is sized to permit the connector, radially extending from the cylindrical portion of the motor, to pass therethrough and the connector opening receives tightly the connector to substantially prevent air from passing between the connector and the cover structure. A second passage (140) of the cover structure is in open communication with the interior and is in communication with the air flow passages of the motor so that air may circulate the motor. A vibration damping member is provided between the cylindrical portion of the motor and the cylindrical section of the cover structure to dampen vibration of the motor.

A heater (56) provides a radiated preheat to the squib fuse. The radiated preheat energy is monitored and controlled (51, 58), and the energy required to effect firing of the squib is proportional to the difference between temperature of the squib, in response to the radiated preheat energy, and the predeterminable firing threshold temperature of the squib.

The integrated pressure pulsation damper and hot soak pressure valve lies normally open adjacent the fuel rail and damps fuel pressure pulsations during engine operation caused by opening and closing of the fuel injectors. When the engine is turned off, and a hot soak condition occurs, the valve automatically closes to retain a high fuel pressure in the fuel rail to facilitate hot restarts. Upon restarting the engine, the valve reverts to its normally open condition, serving as a pressure pulsation damper.
