The dome includes a first element (20) depressable for initiating a first signal and a second element (22) depressable independently of the first element for initiating a second signal different from the first signal. The first element (20) protrudes from the housing to a different height than the second element (22). Thus, the elements can be easily actuated separately from each other.

An electromagnetically operable fuel injector, for a gaseous fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine is disclosed, the injector having a generally longitudinal axis, a ferromagnetic core, a magnetic coil at least partially surrounding the ferromagnetic core, and an armature magnetically coupled to the magnetic coil and being movably responsive to the magnetic coil. The armature actuates a valve closing element which interacts with a fixed valve seat of a fuel valve and is movable away from the fixed valve seat when the magnetic coil is excited, the armature having a generally elongated shape and a generally central opening for axial reception and passage of gaseous fuel from a fuel inlet connector positioned adjacent thereto. The fuel inlet connector and the armature are adapted to permit a first flow path of gaseous fuel through a working gap between the fuel inlet connector and the armature and between the armature and the magnetic coil as part of a path leading to the fuel valve. At least one first fuel flow aperture extends through a wall portion of the armature to define a second flow path of gaseous fuel as part of a path leading to the fuel valve. The fuel flow aperture is dimensioned to provide predetermined fuel flows past said armature and through the armature. In the preferred embodiment the combined flow area across the working gap and through the working gap between the armature and the magnetic coil and valve body shell exceeds the area available for fuel flow through the armature. A method of directing gaseous fuel through the fuel injector is also disclosed.

The variable orifice venturi pump suppresses gas formation in the return fuel flow thereby allowing the use of a lower fuel supply pressure.

A heater (56) provides a radiated preheat to the squib fuse whereby the quantum of energy applied to fire the squib fuse is exceeded. The radiated preheat energy is monitored (58) and controlled.

An automatic injector insertion station (10) for inserting a fuel injector mounting end (14) into a fuel rail cup (20) includes a housing (22) and an injector nest (24) moveable relative to the housing (22). The nest (24) includes first and second ends (26, 28). The first end (26) includes a support (30) for supporting and guiding the injector (12), and is moveable between a preload position, wherein the fuel injector mounting end (14) is adjacent the fuel rail cup (20), and an insertion position, wherein the mounting end (14) and o-ring (16) are mounted in the fuel rail cup (20). A compression spring (32) is mounted in the housing (22) and connected with the second end (28) of the injector nest (24). A piston and cylinder arrangement is operable for compressing the compression spring (32) to a loaded compressed position. The injector nest (24) is moveable by the compression spring (32) compressive force from the preload position to the insertion position to assemble the fuel injector (12) and o-ring (16) into said fuel rail cup (20) through linear spring force, thus preventing damage to the o-ring (16).
