A second method provides directing all signaling messages transmitted by a signaling agent (502) or station (510, 512) and all media packets transmitting voice and data communications through at least one common device within the IP network system (500). The methods further provide for continuously monitoring a subscriber's account balance and terminating the prepaid telephony service if the account balance is less than a predetermined amount.

More particularly, this invention is a method and system for selecting gateways for routing calls through a packet-based telecommunications network interconnected with a public switched telecommunications network. With reference to Fig. 1, this invention is a method and system for dynamically selecting (1-11) a destination gateway (110a, 110b) to complete a call over a path (12) supported at least in part by an IP telephony network (112) and a public switched telephone network (114a, 114b). The method and system further provide for dynamically detecting available gateways (110a, 110b), dynamically removing failed and/or unavailable gateways (6-8), and automatically recovering failed and/or unavailable gateways after a predetermined period of time (6-8).

At least three of the optical cross-connect switches are switched to form a line-switched ring network, thereby forming a ring/mesh network (202). Simply by changing the switching logic of the optical cross-connect swithes within the ring/mesh network, new rings can be created and existing rings can be modified, thereby providing a great deal of flexibility to make changes to the network as traffic patterns change without incurring hardware costs or significant network downtime. Another advantage of the ring/mesh design approach is that spare capacity within the line-switched ring can be utilized by the mesh network, and spare capacity within the mesh network can be utilized by the line-switched ring, thereby significantly increasing the spare efficiency.

Statistical analysis is performed of both the first and second discrete derivatives to detect speech distortion by looking at the distribution of the signals. For example, the kurtosis of the signals is analyzed as well as the number of times these values exceed a predetermined threshold.

A resource manager (560) for managing the resources of a virtual bearer channel platform (250). The platform includes transaction processing units TPUs (161-164). Each TPU processes service requests transmitted by a caller or transmits service requests to a destination called party. The platform (250) has a distribution network that interfaces with the TPUs and acts as a shared bus between the TPUs. The platform receives and transmits communications with a communications network over bearer channels of a high bandwidth pipe (215). A cross-connecting controller (510) multiplexes the signals coming into the platform over the bearer channels onto the distribution network (540), and also demultiplexes signals going out over the bearer channels from the distribution network. The resource manager (560) provides a centralized control for the allocation of bandwidth to the transaction processing units (161-164). It allocates available bearer channels for the connections with the communications network, and also allocates available time slots in the distribution network to the TPUs. The resource manager (560) updates the status of the distribution network in real time, responding to the platform communication needs adaptively.
