摘要: A low melting point alloy is used to sinter metal carbide particles. The alloy is a eutectic-like alloy formed from a binding metal such as iron, cobalt or nickel, in combination with vanadium and chromium. The alloy is preferably formed by forming two separate alloys and blending these together. The first alloy is formed by spray drying together a solution of a binding metal salt such as a cobalt salt with a solution of a chromium salt. The formed particles are then carburized to form a cobalt-chromium-carbon alloy. A separate vanadium alloy is formed in the same manner. The two are combined to establish the amount of chromium and vanadium desired, and this, in turn, is used to sinter metal carbide parts. This permits sintering of the metal carbide parts at temperatures less than 1250° C and in turn significantly inhibits grain grown without a significant decrease in toughness. It is particularly adapted to form carbide products wherein the carbide grain size is as low as 120 nanometers.

摘要: A rugged flexible hollow-fiber waveguide (1) that permits preservation of good transverse spatial coherence of input infrared laser radiation and that transmits substantial power of such radiation, with low attenuation. The present invention preferably comprises a small-diameter thin-wall silica-glass tube (3); a protective coating (2) on the outer surface of the tube; a sufficient reflective layer (4) on the inner surface of the tube (3); and a thickness, optimal for the wavelength(s) of interest, of dielectric on the exposed surface of the reflective layer (4). The fiber (1) is manufactured with processes that maintain the smoothness of the bore.

摘要: The present invention relates to an in vivo system for expression and packaging of recombinant RNA into pseudovirus particles. The invention is based on the discovery that plant viral coat proteins (CPs) may be efficiently expressed in E. coli, and that these recombinant coat proteins will function to assemble in vivo and package recombinant chimeric RNA, containing an operatively linked origin-of-assembly (OAS) sequence, to form mature viral particles containing a foreign RNA. The present invention thus provides for packaging of RNA into a ribonuclease-resistant form that is easily purified and stored, and which overcomes the prior art problems associated with degradation of RNA by ribonucleases. Significantly, the method of the invention is RNA sequence- and length-independent. The components of the invention include a source in the bacterial host of viral coat proteins, and a source in the bacterial host to direct the transcription of a DNA molecule comprising an OAS-encoding DNA and a foreign DNA, which DNA molecule can be transcribed in the host cell to produce an RNA molecule comprising an OAS operatively linked to an RNA of interest. The CPs and OAS are from a plant virus having a rod-shaped helical particle and a single-stranded RNA genome, most preferably tobacco mosaic virus.

摘要: Transdermal estrogen progestin absorption dosage units have been developed which comprise a backing layer, an adjoining polymer layer is an adhesive layer in which at least minimum effective dose of an estrogen is dissolved or microdispersed. Adhered to the polymer layer is an adhesive layer in which is dissolved and or microdispersed at least minimum doses of progestin. Presently preferred is use of the natural estrogen, 17-beta-estradiol, or ethinyl estradiol or combinations thereof and of the progestin, norethindrone or norgestimate or combinations thereof. The units have biologically acceptable adhesive and polymer layers. The adhesive layer can have dispersed one or more skin permeation enhancing agents. A separating layer can optionally be used in making the dosage units, which separate space the adhesive and polymer layers, which permits estrogen transmission from the polymer layer during treatment. Dosage units are provided which transdermally deliver at least minimum daily doses of the estrogen and progestin for multiple days, such as for one week. The invention also provides a process of fertility control and estrogen replacement therapy using the novel dosage units. Also. the invention provides a fertility control system for fertility control using the novel dosage units.
