An optical fiber includes a monolithic elongated mosaic core having a longitudinal axis and configured with a silica-based medium with a uniform refractive index, and a plurality of coaxial elongated individual elements which do not waveguide light at a given wavelength and are received in the silica-glass medium. The refractive indices of the medium and individual anti- waveguiding elements together determine a cumulative effective refractive index of the mosaic core. The optical fiber further includes at least one cladding surrounding the mosaic core and provided with a cladding refractive index which is lower than the index of the mosaic core, so that the mosaic core waveguides the light at the given wavelength.

The method comprises placing a first metal tube, and a second metal tube parallel to the first metal tube such that a first circumferential surface of the first metal tube is in contact with a second circumferential area of the second metal tube, in a stranding machine. A first copper element and a second copper element is positioned in interstitial areas of the first metal tube and the second metal tube, in the stranding machine. The first metal tube, the second metal tube, the first copper element, and the second copper element are stranded together by activating the stranding machine.

Such optical fibers and rods may be employed in fiber lasers and amplifiers. The index of refraction of the glass may be substantially uniform and may be close to that of silica in some embodiments. Possible advantages to such features include reduction of formation of additional waveguides within the core, which becomes increasingly a problem with larger core sizes.

Optical circuits for optical amplifier input and output stages are described. The input stage circuit (42) comprises a first optical waveguide (46) for carrying a signal beam to be amplified, a second optical waveguide (62) for carrying a pump beam, a beam combining means (58) optically coupled to the first and second optical waveguides (46, 62) for producing a combined signal/pump beam, and means for optically coupling the combined signal/pump beam into an amplifying optical fibre (63). The output stage circuit (44) comprises a first output opti cal waveguide (64), an optical fibre attachment means arranged to receive an amplifying optical fibre (63) and an optical fibre attachment means arranged to receive an output optical fibre (76) wherein light from the amplifying optical fibre (63) is optically coupled to the output optical fibre (76) via the first output optical waveguide (64). The first and second optical waveguides (46, 62) and the first output optical waveguide (64) are hollow core optical waveguides formed as channels in a substrate. A fibre amplifier, in particular an erbiurn doped fibre amplifier, comprising such optical circuits is also described.
