If the check result of the current encoding status is true, the second frame type structure is the same as the first frame type structure; and if the check result of the current encoding status is false, the second frame type structure is different from the first frame type structure. Another method and apparatus of encoding frames with a reference frame structure and a frame type structure adaptively according to one or more current encoding statuses after receiving an indication of picture data loss are disclosed. The system may use two different check results to adaptively select the reference frame structure and the frame type structure.

Embodiments are directed to decoding incomplete video data. In one scenario, a computer system receives a piece of a frame (e.g. a video frame). The frame includes multiple frame pieces, where each frame piece is encoded so as to be individually decodable. The computer system decodes the received frame pieces while waiting for at least one additional frame piece to be received. Then, when a condition occurs indicating that the frame is incomplete, the computer system synthesizes frame pieces to replace the additional frame piece that has not yet been received.

Methods of data encoding using trees formed with logic gates are described which lead to spatial compression of image data. Data encoding is achieved using a five-level wavelet transform, such as the Haar or the 2/10 transform. A dual transform engine is used, the first and engine being used for the first part of the first-level transform, the second part of the first-level transform and the subsequent-level transforms being performed by the second transform engine within a time interval which is less than or equal to the time taken by the first transform engine to effect the part-transform. Each bit plane of the resulting coefficients is then encoded by forming a tree structure from the bits and OR logical combinations thereof. Redundant data are removed from the resulting tree structure, and further data can be removed by using a predetermined compression profile. The resulting blocks of compressed data are of variable length and are packaged with sync words and index words for transmission so that the location and identity of the transformed data blocks can be determined from the received signal.

An input receives a video signal comprising a plurality of frames of a video image, each frame comprising a plurality of higher resolution samples. A projection generator generates a different respective projection of each of a sequence of the frames, each projection comprising a plurality of lower resolution samples, wherein the lower resolution samples of the different projections represent different but overlapping groups of the higher resolution samples which overlap spatially in a plane of the video image. Inter frame prediction coding is performed between the projections of different ones of the frames based on a motion vector for each prediction. The motion vector is scaled down from a higher resolution scale corresponding to the higher resolution samples to a lower resolution scale corresponding to the lower resolution samples. An indication of a rounding error resulting from this scaling is determined and signalled to the receiving terminal.
