A process for carbonic ester production, characterized by: (1) reacting carbon dioxide with an organometallic-compound mixture comprising a reactive organometallic compound having at least two metal-oxygen-carbon bonds per molecule and a non-reactive compound which is derived from the reactive organometallic compound and is unable to be regenerated to thereby obtain a reaction mixture comprising a carbonic ester formed by the reaction, the non-reactive compound unable to be regenerated, and a modified organometallic compound derived from the reactive organometallic compound and capable of being regenerated; (2) separating the reaction mixture into a first part comprising the carbonic ester and the non-reactive compound unable to be regenerated and a second part comprising the modified organometallic compound capable of being regenerated; and (3) reacting the second part of the reaction mixture with an alcohol to form water and an organometallic-compound mixture comprising a reactive organometallic compound having at least two metal-oxygen-carbon bonds per molecule and a non-reactive compound which is derived from the reactive organometallic compound and is unable to be regenerated, and removing the water from the organometallic-compound mixture.
