A liquid-crystal composition containing a compound represented by general formula (1) as the first component and a compound represented by any of general formulae (2-1 to 2-6) as the second component. The composition satisfies various characteristics required of liquid-crystal compositions for preparing active-matrix liquid-crystal display devices and has a reduced threshold voltage, an excellent low-temperature compatibility and a wide nematic-phase range.

A tetracyclic chlorobenzene derivative represented by general formula (I) and being suitable for use in active-matrix display elements and a liquid-crystal composition containing the same (wherein each of rings A, B and C independently represents trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, etc.; each of Z1, Z2 and Z3 represents -CH2CH2- or a covalent bond provided that at least one thereof is -CH2CH2-; each of L1 and L2 represents H, etc.; and R represents C1-C10 alkyl, etc.; provided that the ring A is 1,4-phenylene when Z1 and Z3 are covalent bonds and Z2 is -CH2CH2- and is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene when Z1 and Z2 are covalent bonds and Z3 is -CH2CH2- and that the rings B and C cannot be 1,4-phenylene). This compound has large values of refractive index and permittivity anisotropies, exhibits a liquid-crystal phase in a wide temperature range, is excellent in low-temperature compatibility with known liquid-crystal compounds and provides a liquid-crystal composition suitable of, especially, TFT drive.
