Disclosed is a power control method for a mobile station which has at least one frame including a data transmission duration where data is transmitted at a first frequency, and a data transmission-off duration where a second frequency is searched to perform an inter-frequency handoff to the second frequency. The transmission power at the data transmission duration is increased to compensate for the loss of transmission power during the data transmission-off duration. In the method, a base station sets a power control threshold depending on the length of the data transmission-off duration. The base station receives power-increased data and compares the received power of the data signal with the power control threshold. The base station generates a power-up command when the power control threshold is higher than the receiving power, and generates a power-down command when the power control threshold is lower than the receiving power.

A device and method for controlling communication on a reverse link in a mobile communication system includes a measurer, a controller, and a reverse link transmitter according to an embodiment of the present invention. The measurer detects a power control bit from a channel signal received on a forward link and measures the reception strength of the channel signal using the detected power control bit. The controller compares the reception strength with a threshold and generates a signal for controlling transmission on a reverse link if the channel status of the forward link is determined to be bad during the comparison. The reverse link transmitter stops channel transmission on the reverse link in response to the transmission control signal.

A method for determining a gating rate in a base station for a CDMA communication system is disclosed. The method comprises transmitting information for assigning a dedicated control channel and a traffic channel to a mobile station, when a call is generated; after call setup, transmitting a message requesting mobile station's capability information to the mobile station; receiving the capability information including gating availability information of a reverse pilot signal and information about at least one gating rate, transmitted from the mobile station in reply to the request message; and determining a gating rate according to the capability information, transmitting information about the determined gating rate to the mobile station, and transitioning to an active state. The mobile station's capability information includes information about gating availability and at least one gating rate, when gating is available.

In an outer-loop power control method for a non-frame data transmission period of a dedicated control channel (DCCH) which transmits frame data discontinuously, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of power control bits (PCBs) received at a mobile station from a base station is measured for the frame period, and it is determined whether the frame has errors based on the measured SNR. A closed-loop power control threshold is increased if a frame error exists and decreased if no frame errors exist.
