A fibre reinforced composite component is provided having cured fibre reinforced wall elements which extend in side by side relation along the length or width of the component between the front face and the rear face and which are formed by setting up an assembly of mandrels in side by side disposition, which are clad with a reinforcing fibre material, curing the material after resin impregnation to form the wall elements, and removing the mandrels to form cells bounded or partly bounded by the wall elements.

A method of producing a structural component (12) from a primary wall structure (14) which defines a plurality of juxtaposed primary cells (15) which extend between and which are open to the front face and the rear face of the component (12) and a secondary wall structure (16) within the primary wall structure (14) which divides each primary cell (15) into two or more subcells (151, 152) comprises first forming the primary wall structure (14) and then forming the secondary wall structure (16) within the primary wall structure (14) by bringing the primary wall structure (14) into a condition in which it lies within a body of liquid, the surface of which provides or is provided with a photosensitive layer and in which the photosensitive layer is at a predetermined level in each primary cell (15) and exposing the photosensitive layer to radiation source to bring the photosensitive layer to a consolidated state within the primary wall structure (14) to form the secondary wall structure (16). Where the component (12) is a noise attenuation panel, the secondary wall structure (16) may be so formed as to provide for the required sound absorption properties while providing substantially no support for structural loads.

A structural component including a structural cellular core for use in highly loaded structures such as those required on aircraft is constructed by (i) providing a plurality of mandrels, (ii) wrapping those mandrels in fibre reinforced thermosetting or thermoplastic material, (iii) arranging the wrapped mandrels in such a manner as to produce a charged mandrel assembly in which no two opposed faces of any two adjacent mandrels are without an intervening layer or layers of core material, (iv) subjecting the charged assembly to a consolidation treatment to bring the core material into a consolidated state and (v) removing the mandrels to produce the structural cellular core. A skin or skins can be bonded to the core so as to close off the core at one or both ends either by attaching skins to the consolidated core or including skin material in the consolidation treatment.
