The invention relates to a recording material having a dimensionally stable, two-dimensional support, preferably an aluminium support, and a negative-working, radiation-sensitive layer which comprises a diazonium salt, a polymeric binder and a sulphobetaine. In addition, the layer may also comprise a polymerizable monomer or oligomer and a photopolymerization initiator. The front of the recording material may be matted or pigmented, and the back may be coated with an organic polymeric material. The sulphobetaine improves the solubility of the diazonium salts in aqueous-alkaline developers without reducing the resistance of the offset printing plates produced from the recording material.

A method for making a relief pattern of a cured resin on a transparent colored layer which comprises applying a coating of a photocurable resin composition whose spectral sensitivity varies depending on the pH of the composition, on a transparent colored layer, adjusting the pH of the composition to a predetermined level, and exposing the coating to visible light irradiation through the transparent colored layer. The irradiated layer is developed to obtain a relief pattern corresponding to visible spectra transmitted through the transparent colored layer.

A printing plate is produced by the steps of preparing sensitive layer-forming photosensitive composition containing an organic foaming agent and, upon drying of the composition, thermally decompose the organic foaming agent to roughen the surface of the photosensitive layer. The process in accordance with this invention requires no special mechanical treatment for forming the photosensitive layer, eliminates the need of rearrangement or modification of existing coating equipments and also drastically decreases a working time for vacuum-contact operation, thus resulting in an efficient fabrication of printing plate and a greatly reduced production cost.

The sensitivity of a photosensitive composition based on an aromatic diazonium salt which gets sticky upon exposure to light, is improved by adding a salt of a compound of the general formula: wherein R 1 and R 2 each represents a straight chain alkyl group, and X, Y and Z each represents H, a straight chain alkyl group or an alkoxy group, but two or more of X, Y and Z cannot be H at the same time. Such compositions are used to form a pattern of powder coat layer on a substrate, e.g. a colour television picture tube.
