    摘要: A method of inhibiting inadvertent and unauthorized writing and reading of information to and from a storage medium comprises the steps of (a) writing a first code in a predetermined location on the storage medium, the first code being indicative of a first protection mode of the storage medium (112); (b) receiving a command to change the protection mode of the storage medium from the first protection mode to a second protection mode (118); and, in response to the command, (c) writing in the predetermined location on the storage medium, in place of the first code, a second code indicative of the second protection mode (136, 138). A protection mode can inhibit writing to the storage medium, both writing and reading to and from the medium, or neither. Changing of protection modes can also be password protected.

Then, a second track is written at a different azimuth angle while leaving a first portion of a first track (B30). Then, a thrid track is written (B38) at the azimuth angle of the first track while inhibiting writing when a servo area is encountered (B42). Servo control takes place based on the amplitude of the servo information read from a head spaced behind the write element (B46, B50).

    摘要: According to one aspect of the invention, methods and systems for operating a magnetic storage media drive to perform read/write operations to magnetic storage media in an overwrite protected mode are provided. In one example, a method includes receiving a write request and associated write data and determining if the magnetic storage medium is overwrite protected. If the storage medium is overwrite protected the method includes writing the write data to the storage medium followed by an EOD marker associated with the end of the write data, allowing write operations to the storage medium after previously written data, and preventing write operations to the storage medium prior to previous EOD markers.
