A security device for use with a telephone handset having a microphone and an ear transducer is adapted to prevent eavesdropping while the handset is in an on hook position. The security device is comprised of switching means (115a,115b,116a,116b) disposed in the handset and adapted to disable the transducers. The switching means is switched to a first state when the handset is placed within a first predetermined orientation corresponding to a secure mode and is switched to a second state when the handset is placed within a second predetermined orientation corresponding to an operative mode. The individual switches (115a,115b,116a,116b) forming said switching means are held in position on a switch mounting assembly (100) comprised of a mounting block (110) disposed on a circuit board (111).

A solid-state surge protection device comprises a semiconductor chip (10) sandwiched between two electrodes (11, 12). A resilient sealing member or layer (14) comprised of a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin extends around the periphery of the device, adhering to both electrodes, so as to seal the interface region between the chip and each electrode. The resin is a flexible, dielectric material which is not disrupted by heat generated under surge conditions in the device, is environmentally inert, and preferably remains compliant under extremely cold conditions. The electrodes of the device can move together into electric-conductive contact in the event of chip destruction, or can move back into contact with the chip if separated therefrom by an arc.

A SAW (surface acoustic wave) device includes a substrate having thereon at least one apodized IDT (inter-digital transducer) (10). The axis (18) of the apodization pattern is inclined towards a driven conductive rail (14) of the IDT at the ends of the pattern, whereby the driven end fingers have a low capacitive coupling to a ground plane on which the substrate is supported. The capacitive coupling to the ground plane may additionally be reduced by supporting the substrate on the ground plane via an insulating support, whereby an air gap or the insulating support decreases the capacitance between the IDT and the ground plane.

An edge emitting optoelectronic source (120) is integrally formed on a surface (112) of a semiconductor substrate. An optical waveguide (130) is integrally formed on the same surface of the substrate adjacent to the source. The waveguide is aligned with the source for optical coupling of the source to the waveguide. The waveguide comprises an optical diverter for diverting at least a portion of any light propagating along the waveguide toward the source through a surface of the waveguide. An optoelectronic detector (150) is secured to that surface of the waveguide through which light is diverted for receiving light diverted through that surface. The resulting optoelectronic apparatus is suitable for launching and detecting optical signals in large volume bidirectional optical fiber transmission systems.

An optical waveguide is made by forming a layer of SiO₂ on a substrate and implanting a region of the SiO₂ layer with Si ions to define a region containing a stoichiometric excess of Si which defines a region having an elevated refractive index surrounded by a region having a lower refractive index. The resulting optical waveguide is stable at the high temperatures required for many semiconductor processing methods, and is useful for optical interconnection in integrated optical and optoelectronic devices.

The logic gate (100) as defined above operates as an invertor. The logic gate may further comprise one or more additional enhancement mode switching FETs, each having a drain connected to the load device, a source connected to the feedback device, and a gate connected to a corresponding input terminal. With the additional switching FETs and input terminals, the logic gate functions as a NOR gate.

A method of deploying a cable or other line (34) in a fluid transportation pipeline (10) whilst in normal operation full of and transporting a fluid (12) under a positive pressure. A collapsible centralising device (62,64) is attached to the leading end of the cable (34) and is then fed in a collapsed state into the pipeline (10) via a first fluid sealing means (30) at the cable entry position (14). That device (62,64) maintains the cable end (34) centralised in the pipeline cross section whilst the cable (34) is fed into the pipeline (10). Magnetic sensing means (68,74,76) disposed near the cable exit position sense the presence of the cable end (34) and control the cable infeed so as to position the cable end (34) in a predetermined cable retrieval position. A tubular lance (54) is fed into the pipeline (10) through a second fluid sealing means (32) disposed at the cable exit position (16), and a grab (56) housed in the nozzle of the lance (54) is ejected to engage and capture part of the centralising device (62,64) and cable end (34), whereafter the grab (56) closes on being drawn back into the lance (54). The lance (54) is then withdrawn through the second fluid sealing means (32) so as to draw with it the grab (56) and the captured centralising device (62,64) and cable end (34).
