An insulation material suitable for use on rocket motor cases and airframe surfaces is provided. The insulation material is formed from a mixture of cork particulate, a plurality of fibers, and a siloxane based binder. The cork particulate, the binder, and the fibers are present in a mass ratio of 10-100 parts binder to 0.1-50 parts fiber to 1-100 parts cork. The insulation material may have a homogeneous or non-homogeneous composition and may be composite in nature.

The protective layer described above is used in combination with a bond layer provided between the protective layer and the silicon based substrate which functions as oxygen getter and includes an oxygen gettering agent. By oxygen gettering agent is meant a refractory metal oxide former which forms an oxide at operational condition of (high temperature and aqueous environment) having a melting point of greater than 1500°C wherein the negative free energy of formation of the refractory metal oxide from the refractory metal is more than 100 Kcal/mole. Suitable oxygen gettering agents include silicon and other refractory metals. An oxygen gettering agent may also be added to the protective layer.

A method is disclosed for producing composite, hollow fibre gas separation membranes (34). The external surfaces of the porous hollow fibre tubes that are used in the construction of the membranes (34) are subjected to a modification technique before the external surfaces are coated with a thin layer of selected polymer so as to increase the number of pores in the fibre surface. The modification technique comprises the steps of soacking the membranes with a mixture of water and acetone, rinsing with water and drying the membrane. The composite hollow fibre membranes (34) may be used in a method of manufacturing a gas separation module (32).
