The method and device is directed to determine the strength based upon monitoring the variations in the intensify of a narrow beam of light transmitted through the sheet as the sheet moves perpendicularly through the beam. Use is made of a sensor (10) consisting of two halves. The source half (12), disposed on one side of the sheet of paper (16), directs a beam of light through the sheet (16) whose formation is to be determined. The receiver half (14) is disposed on the opposite side of the sheet (16) and produces an electrical signal proportional to the intensity of the light which is transmitted through the sheet (16). The source half (12) includes a light source (18), such as a high intensity incandescent lamp (20), and a reflector (22) for directing the beam of light from the lamp (20) toward the sheet (16). The determination is based upon the average basis weight, the local basis weight, the transmittance, the floc size and the line speed.

A system for determining the basis weight of cord reinforced tyre fabric which involves the use of two radiation sources, for example a collimated x-ray beam, and a beta ray source. One of the radiation sources and its corresponding sensor (e.g., the x-ray source) is used to determine the fractional area of the fabric not containing steel cords, while the other (e.g., the beta ray source) is used to measure the average attenuation of radiation passing through the fabric. Both sources and their corresponding sensors are movably mounted on a pair of beams which extend across the width of the fabric web. The source sensor assemblies continuously scan across the fabric width so that information from the entire fabric area is obtained.

A system and method are disclosed which provide a determination of the strength of paper or other sheet materials. The method used is not destructive and can be used to make measurements «on-line» while, for example, the paper sheet is being manufactured. A sensor senses a pheripheral characteristic of the sheet which is related to the elastic modulus and bending stiffness of the sheet and generates electrical signals corresponding thereto. A computer calculates a strength value for the sheet based upon the these electrical signals. This computed strenght value may be correlated with «Mullen» and other standardized strength tests.

The disclosed process includes making a series of changes to the target value of the actuator while measuring corresponding changes in the output of the controlled process.
