Disclosed is the observation that 7-aryl-quinone methides and 4-tert-butylcatechol, when used in combination in a vinyl aromatic monomer to inhibit polymerization, do not inhibit polymerization to the same extent as each would if used separately. Stated another way, a phenomenon has been observed that when these two compounds are used together, they can, to a large extent, render each other unable to inhibit polymerization in a vinyl aromatic monomer. Also disclosed are methods of preventing adverse results of this interaction when undesired and a method of using this interaction to prepare a reactive vinyl aromatic monomer having a concentration of 4-tert-butylcatechol that would otherwise inhibit polymerization. The invention is disclosed to be useful with the production and storage of any vinyl aromatic monomer and is disclosed to be particularly useful with the production and storage of styrene monomer.

The present invention addresses heat integration in an alkylation/transalkylation process involving alkylation of an aromatic substrate with a C 2 -C 4 alkylating agent coupled with separation to recover a monoalkylated aromatic product and liquid phase transalkylation of a polyalkylated product. Aromatic feedstock and a C 2 -C 4 alkylating agent are supplied to an alkylation reaction zone which is operated to produce an alkylated product. The output from the alkylation reaction zone initially travels through an arrangement of heat exchangers. From there, the alkylation effluent passes into the first separation zone which is operated to produce a lower boiling fraction comprising the aromatic substrate, which may be recycled to the alkylation reaction zone, and a higher boiling fraction comprising a mixture of monoalkylated and polyalkylated aromatics. This lower boiling fraction first travels back through portions of the heat exchanger arrangement on the way to recycle into the alkylation zone. The higher boiling fraction of the first separation zone is supplied to a secondary separation zone to produce a second lower boiling fraction comprising the desired monoalkylated product and a higher boiling fraction comprising polyalkylated product. At least a portion of the higher boiling polyalkylated fraction passes through a portion of the heat exchanger arrangement into a transalkylation reaction zone containing a molecular sieve transalkylation catalyst operated under liquid phase conditions to cause disproportionation of the polyalkylated fraction to arrive at a disproportionation product having a reduced polyalkylated aromatic content and an enhanced monoalkylated aromatic content.

A process for the production of an alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon such as ethylbenzene by alkylation of benzene with an olefin such ethylene, propylene, 1-butene or isobutene with a catalyst in an alkylation reactor under liquid or gas phase conditions includes alkylating benzene with an olefin in a reaction zone at a temperature of from about 175°C. to about 500°C. and a pressure of from about 200 psi to about 800 psi, withdrawing a reactor effluent stream and separating the reactor effluent stream into a product stream and a recycle stream each containing ethylbenzene and unreacted benzene and directing the recycle stream containing ethylbenzene and unreacted benzene back to the reaction zone wherein the ratio of the liquid volume of the recycle stream to the volume of fresh benzene feed is from 0.1:1 to 50:1.
