An improved method for high-volume production of coated stents with highly uniform stent coatings using a roll coating technique is provided. In a first embodiment, uncoated stents (8) are placed onto rotating stent holders with automated stent handling equipment. The holders are mounted on an endless conveyer belt (1) which advances the stents toward a stent coater. As the stents (8) advance through the coater (9), the holders (7) rotate, thereby rolling the stents (8) about their longitudinal axes as coating material is sprayed toward them, ensuring the stents (8) are uniformly coated on their exterior and interior surfaces. After the conveyer (1) turns to carry the coated stents (8) back toward the loading area, the rotating stents (8) pass again through the coating spray, downstream of the initial coating location, thereby increasing the efficient utilization of the coating material. The conveyer (1) then advances the coated stents to an unloading area for removal before the holders return to the stent loading area to receive new stents.

A method and apparatus for coating a fastener with head and shank portions is disclosed. The invention includes the steps of and apparatus for transferring the fasteners from a feed mechanism such that the fasteners are positioned for coating. The fasteners are then conveyed through a plurality of operating stations, beginning with a heating station where the shank portions of the fasteners are heated. Subsequently, at a material applying station, a coating material is applied to the heated shank portions. A preferred embodiment of the method and apparatus of the present invention includes using a magnetic holder to carry the fasteners horizontally by their head portions, heating the shank portion to a temperature above the melting point of the applied material and applying the material to the heated shank portion to form a coating thereon. The magnetic holders are part of an endless traveling belt that rotates continually. The fastener carriers have teeth thatengage a rack to rotate the fasteners. A conveyor provides added air cooling for the coated fasteners, which can continue to be rotated. Also disclosed is a transfer wheel with two sets of notches that is synchronously coupled to the traveling belt for placing and aligning fasteners on the belt for coating.

This invention relates to a method of rotating and transferring a hollow cylindrical work without causing the outer surfaces of a plurality of such works to come into contact with each other and a non-contact method of coating a hollow cylindrical work which is rotated and transferred, characterized in that flanges having bores in the central portions thereof are fitted over both end portions of a hollow cylindrical work, a shaft being inserted through the bores in these flanges and supported horizontally together with the work at each end on and rotated by a plurality of paired vertically movable rollers which are spaced by a distance not shorter than the length of the work, a pusher for moving the work being provided on the shaft, a coating mechanism being provided at an intermediate portion of the shaft in order to coat the work with a material, a plurality of flanged works being moved by the pusher toward a discharge end of the shaft and removed therefrom in order. A plurality of works can be fitted around the shaft continuously without causing the outer surfaces of the works to come into contact with each other as the shaft is supported and rotated horizontally, and they can thereafter be removed from the shaft at the discharge end thereof. The works can also be moved smoothly on the shaft as the rotation of the shaft is transmitted accurately to the works.
