The surface to be coated is passed through a wave of liquid coating, such as an aqueous dispersion, followed by removal of the excess coating. This apparatus includes: (a) a device (62) for inducing a positive charge onto a coating composition, (b) a device (62) for creating a field of positively-charged coating particles, (c) a device (64) for supporting a series of hollow containers in spaced relation to one another which includes a series of vertically-oriented spindles, (d) a device for transporting the spindles in series through the field of positively-charged coating particles, (e) a gripping chuck (46) made from, or coated with, a dielectric material, or both, mounted to the upper end of a spindle, the chuck (46) having a recess defined for receiving the opening of a hollow container, and (f) a grounding device (70) positioned such that, when the dielectric container is in the path of the sprayed, positively-charged coating particles the grounding device is also in the path but shielded therefrom by the dielectric material. The grounding device is insulated from direct electrical contact with the supported container. The grounding device can be replaced by an internal charging device for inducing a negative charge onto a hollow container being supported by the gripping chuck. Moreover, the grounding device or the internal charging device can be used in conjunction with an external charging device for inducing a negative charge onto a hollow container being supported by the gripping chuck.

An applicator assembly for applying hot melt adhesive to a substrate such as the end flaps of a sift-proof carton includes slot nozzles employing elongated, wear-resistant doctor blades formed with a fluid discharge slot. The doctor blades, preferably in the form of hardened steel plates, are releasably clamped to the body of the applicator in communication with the outlet of an internal passageway in the applicator body which receives adhesive from a flow control device such as an adhesive gun. The plates forming the doctor blades are separated by a shim to define the fluid discharge slot into which the adhesive flows from the internal passageway. The lowermost ends of the doctor blades are formed in various configurations to spread the adhesive in the desired pattern or thickness on the substrate depending upon the type of adhesive employed or the requirements of a given application.

Single ply paperboard containers (20) are wax-coated by directing a relatively narrow spray band (SP) of atomized wax towards the interior surfaces of the containers being treated. The spray band (SP) is volumetrically asymmetrical and is oriented relative to the interior surfaces of the container such that its volumetric asymmetry (SP') is directed towards the bottom circumferential seam between the tubular side wall and bottom wall of the containers (20). In this manner, a minimal (but fluid-impervious effective) nonsaturating amount of wax will be applied to the interior surfaces of the container so as to preserve the vivid appearance of color graphics and/or indicia that may be printed on the exterior surface of the container. At the same time, the volumetric asymmetry (SP') and orientation of the spray band ensures that a maximum amount of wax will be applied at or near the circumferential bottom seam so that a fluid-impervious fillet seal may be established thereat. The appearance of the color graphics and/or indicia may optionally be further improved by the electrostatic spray application (22, 24) of a suitable lacquer. The applied lacquer, when dried, will thereby enhance the "glossy" exterior appearance of the interior wax-coated containers (20).
