The separator (30) functions within the system to be self-controlling for load increases or decreases. In accordance with preferred embodiments of the system, the separator (30) may be positioned inside or outside of an oxidation ditch (12). The separator (30) may also be utilized in combination with an aeration basin.

Combinations of physicochemical and biological treatment processes are capable of removing dioxins, polych- lorobiphenyfs (PCB's) and other halogenated organic compounds from wastewaters. The dioxins and PCB's are removed by at least 90 percent in the pretreatment steps of neutralization, oxidation, and sedimentation; the residual amounts are removed in a powdered activated carbon enhanced sequencing batch reactor (PAC-SBR) operating at a high mixed liquor suspended solids concentration (>5000 mg/L). Powder activated carbon (PAC) is supplemented to the bioreactor to ensure complete removal of the dioxins - ( 0 . 8 ppt) and PCB's ( The PAC-SBR enhanced biological treatment process is capable of meeting stringent effluent limits on not only on dioxins and PCB's but also on other toxic halogenated organic compounds. The treatment cost of this process is substantially less than either the conventional granular activated carbon adsorption technology or two stage treament of ! biodegradation and carbon absorption.

High BOD clarified wastewater is treated in a contactor with activated sludge for rapid BOD absorption without appreciable metabolism of the BOD. Shortly thereafter the sludge is separated from the effluent of reduced BOD. The sludge is aerated to restore its BOD absorption capacity and recycled to the contactor for treatment of incoming wastewater.

An aeration tank, particularly for use in the treatment of sewage liquor, trade effluent and the like, comprises a chamber (6). generally oval in plan, to provide a continuous flow path F, inlet and outlets pipes (10, 12) being provided in conventional manner. Extending across the flow path is impeller means in the form of a rotor (14) on which paddles (16) are mounted. Downstream of the impeller and extending across the flow path is a deflector means afforded by a baffle (18). The baffle extends from a level adjacent to, preferably above, the surface of the liquor in the tank to a level below the surface of the liquor, and is inclined so as to cause liquor impelled by said impeller means, and air entrapped in the liquor, to be deflected towards the bottom of the tank. In this manner a high oxygen input may be obtained with a relatively low power input.
