The invention relates to an antenna for receiving satellite signals and terrestrial signals. Said antenna comprises a monopole (12) with a first end that is linked with a feeding point (14) and a second end and an unfed dipole (16) that is mounted in axial alignment with the monopole (12) and at a distance to the second end of the monopole. With the inventive design the maximum antenna gain is at an elevation angle of about 45°. The invention also relates to an antenna modification device that comprises a dipole and a connecting element by means of which the dipole is linked with the end of an existing monopole antenna in such a manner that the dipole is unfed and is mounted in axial alignment with the monopole and at a distance to the second end of the monopole.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are able to provide wireless communications at increased data rates. These systems involve using a plurality of antennas on both the transmitter and receiver and the problem of how to accommodate such structures in user terminals, which are often required to be hand held then arises. An antenna arrangement which is suitable for MIMO communications and which can be incorporated into a user terminal such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) is described. A pair of co-polarised umbrella monopoles and a slot antenna are incorporated into a flap which extends at approximately 90 DEG to the body of the PDA. A fourth monopole is mounted and protrudes from the PDA itself.

The ground copper is adhered to a substrate and has an upper, shorter and generally horizontal segment and a lower, longer and also generally horizontal segment that are connected at one end thereof by a vertical segment. The radiation copper is adhered to the substrate and has a copper shaped substantially as a mirror symmetry of the ground copper and spaced apart from the ground copper by a gap at the end of the ground and radiation coppers where the shorter and longer horizontal segments thereof are connected. The antenna has a gross span of approximately 42 mm and a height of approximately 7 mm. The gap is approximately 0.6 mm.

The angle ( alpha ) made at the bends (1a, 2a) is set optimally to provide optimum directivity, and thus high gain. This antenna is small and short, and it serves as a UHF and pseudo-microwave antenna for mobile communications.
