A method of recycling rare earth metals included in a waste material, wherein the method comprises acidic leaching of the waste material using a non-oxidizing acid for solubilizing at least a part of metals included in the waste material while maintaining at least a part of non-metallic materials of the waste material in solid form, separating the remaining solid components of the leached waste material from a solution of the solubilized metals, and precipitating selectively at least a part of the rare earth metals in the solution while maintaining other metals in dissolved form, wherein the precipitating comprises adding sulphates to the solution of the solubilized metals and adding an alkaline solution to the solution of the solubilized metals for increasing the pH-value. As a non-onidizing acid, it is preferable to use hydrocloric acid in a concentration between 10% and 40%. As added sulphate, sodium sulphate is advantageously used as an aqueous solution.

A method of recycling useful metals is provided. The method enables useful metals including indium, zinc, yttrium, europium, lanthanum, terbium, gadolinium, antimony, lead, copper, tin, and silver to be recovered from wastes, such as wasted flat panel displays, and recycled economical with small energy consumption. The method of recycling useful metals includes: a step in which wastes comprising various flat panel displays, e.g., liquid-crystal display panels, are crushed/powdered; a step in which the resultant particles are dissolved in an aqueous hydrofluoric acid solution; and a step in which various metal oxides and various metal fluorides which remain undissolved are filtered off and the aqueous hydrofluoric acid solution containing various metal ions is electrolyzed to deposit and recover metals for transparent-electrode oxides, such as indium and zinc, and other useful metals.

A process is described for leaching a value metal from an ore containing said value metal, the process including the steps of leaching the ore in the presence of hydrochloric acid so as to form a soluble metal-chloride salt in a leach solution; adding sulphuric acid to the leach solution; recovering a metal-sulphate salt from the leach solution; and regenerating hydrochloric acid. The ore may be an oxidic base metal ore, such as a zinc oxide ore; a lateritic nickel ore, such as a saprolitic or limonitic ore; a sulphide ore or a titanium ore. The value metal is typically selected from the group consisting of Zn, Cu, Ti, Al, Cr, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Pb, Na, K, Ca, platinum group metals and gold. The metal in the metal-sulphate salt may be the value metal, or may be a metal of less value than the value metal, such as magnesium. The regenerated hydrochloric acid is recycled within the leach process.
