摘要: An improved sealing arrangement 40 is provided for a replaceable cylinder liner 10. The sealing arrangement 40 includes a seal 26 in the form of a band that is positioned in an annular groove 28 under a flange seat 20 of the cylinder liner 10. The annular groove 28 includes a first and a second undercut 30,34 that provides a relief area for the seal 26 to deflect into lessening the opportunity of damage to the seal 26. The first and second undercuts 30,34 also relieve stress in the axial direction improving the fatigue life of the cylinder liner10.

摘要: A method of casting-in-place iron cylinder liners in light alloy, preferably aluminium, engine blocks is made possible by a cylinder liner insert comprising at least two generally cylindrical cylinder liners (102) which are joined together along aligned portions of the liners in a "semi-siamese" fashion. The cylinder liners are joined at the lower ends (106) of the liners (102) with the upper combustion ends (104) remaining independent and unattached. Alternately, narrow ribs can be formed at or arched above the upper ends (104) of the liners to join and stabilise the upper ends (104) of the liners (102) during cylinder block casting operations, with such ribs ultimately being machined off during block finishing operations.

摘要: A pressure vessel made of a composite material according to the present invention is constituted of an inner tube (2) formed of a fiber-reinforced resin material, a rigid attaching member (10 or 30) which is fit into at least one of the two axial ends (4 and 5) of the inner tube (2) and is provided with at least one protrusion (20 or 42) made of a fibrous material, and an outer tube (3) formed by winding a resin-impregnated fibrous material (50) around the peripheries of both the inner tube and the attaching member while reversing the direction of winding of the fibrous material by hooking it on said protrusion. Each of the sections where the attaching member (10 or 30) is fit into the axial end (4 or 5) of the inner tube (2) is designed to involve at least one pair of mutually abutting faces (7 and 22; 8 and 23; or 9 and 36), and the diameter of the periphery of an area ranging from the abutting face (23 or 36) of the attaching member (10 or 30) to at least a section provided with the protrusion (20 or 42) is adjusted to be nearly equal to the outer diameter of the inner tube (2).

摘要: A seismic source (10) is described which drives one or more jets of high velocity water into an underwater environment and then abruptly terminates the jets. The momentum of the free jet columns generate vapor cavities in the water away from the housing (12) of the source which cavities collapse coherently to generate the seismic signal. A piston (22) and a valve sleeve (38) are slidably mounted in a cylinder (14) in the housing. The piston seals off a volume of gas on its rearward side. The forward side of the piston defines one surface of a chamber (24). The chamber receives high pressure water from an inlet. In its rearward position the valve sleeve seals a set of jet apertures (60) in the side of the cylinder. In its forward position the valve sleeve opens the apertures, exposing the chamber interior to the exterior underwater environment. With the valve sleeve in its rearward position with the apertures sealed, the high pressure water entering the chamber (24) moves the piston to its rearward position and compresses the gas. The sleeve (38) is hydraulically actuated upon command to abruptly open the jet apertures, enabling the piston to move forwardly under the pressure of the compressed gas, driving the water through the jet apertures so as to form the jets. The piston (22) enters the interior (40) of the sleeve (38) near the forward end of its stroke and, concurrently, abruptly terminates the jets. To re-arm the source, the sleeve is actuated to close the jet openings whereupon the high pressure water resets the piston (22). Upon the next command, the valve sleeve (38) is again actuated to open the apertures and the next seismic signal is generated.
