An organosilicon high molecular compound having a skeleton of silicon and carbon or a compound obtained by polymerization of an organometallic compound and the organosilicon high molecular compound is melted into a fiber, then the fiber is antimelt-treated in an oxidizing atmosphere, and the antimelt-treated yarns are thereafter heated in an atmosphere of inert gas to obtain a fiber of silicon carbide containing 2 to 20 % by volume of oxygen. This fiber is further sintered in an atmosphere of inert gas at a temperature of 1400 to 2100 deg. C and a pressure of 300 to 3000 kg/cm². A sintered body of silicon carbide having an excellent bending strength is obtained without the use of a sintering agent or a binder. A fiber of silicon carbide having a predetermined oxygen content and a thin amorphous carbon layer thereon is obtained from the starting fiber by antimelt-treating and then heating in an atmosphere of a mixture of an inert gas and a hydrocarbon gas. Silicon carbide powder is mixed with the fiber thus obtained and the mixture is then heated in an atmosphere of inert gas under pressure. The sintered body thus obtained has a high strength and a remarkably small decrease in strength at high temperature.

Referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, reference numeral (10) refers to a graphite electrode among three graphite electrodes that correspond to a three-phase AC power source. A graphite electrode is connected to each of the graphite electrodes (10) via a nipple. An electric current is supplied to these electrodes in an arc furnace of melt and refine metals. The invention deals with a method of refining and melting metals and a cooling apparatus used therefor, wherein, during the refining, a cooling liquid (11) which substantially consists of water is continuously sprayed onto the outer periphery (10a) of at least one graphite electrode (10) among the three graphite electrodes or, more particularly, onto the outer periphery (10a) of the graphite electrode (10) between an electrode holder and a furnace cover. In this case, the cooling liquid (11) is sprayed not in parallel with a horizontal level L-L, but upward or downward at an angle of 10° to 35° with respect to the level L-L to cool the electrode.

A ceramic-based composite fiber material (1) formed by disposing a premolded body (5), which is obtained by weaving fiber bundles (3) each of which is formed by bundling a plurality of ceramic fibers (2), in a matrix of a ceramic material, and characterized in that a first ceramic matrix M1 is formed in an inner space of each of the fiber bundles (3) and the portion in the vicinity of an outer circumference thereof, a second ceramic matrix M2 being formed in an inner space, which is other than these fiber bundles (3), of the premolded body (5) and an outer circumferential portion thereof. This material is also characterized in that ceramic fiber of a volume ratio Vf of not less than 10 % is complexed in a reaction-sintered matrix. A covering layer of not less than 50 νm in thickness comprising a ceramic material alone may be formed integrally with and on the surface of the ceramic-based composite fiber material.
