According to said method, the amine and the phosgene are first mixed and are reacted to isocyanate in a reactor, a reaction gas (1) leaving the reactor and containing isocyanate and hydrochloric acid being cooled in a quencher (3) by adding a liquid quenching medium (5), resulting in a mixture of reaction gas and quenching medium as a product stream (7). The quenching medium (5) used is a mixture which contains at least one solvent and the isocyanate and which is removed from the production process, solid particles being removed from the quenching medium (5) before it is added to the quencher (3).
