In order to inhibit ordinary operation of an engine auto-stop and restart system of a motor vehicle when the vehicle is under forward-backward movements for being put into a garage or parking place or the like, the system comprises the following elements. These elements are a first detector that detects whether the vehicle is at a standstill or not, a second detector that detects whether a brake pedal of the vehicle is depressed or not, and a third detector that detects a select position assumed by an automatic transmission mounted in the vehicle. A control unit including a microprocessor is further provided for carrying out judging whether a first given condition suited for stopping the engine is established or not, based on the judgements detected by the first and second detectors; stopping operation of the engine automatically when the first given condition is established while the engine is under operation; and keeping the operation of the engine when the select position detected by the third detector is a reverse range position even when the first given condition has been established under operation of the engine.

A fuel injection control system for a cylinder direct injection spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The fuel injection control system is configured to perform: (a) judging a homogeneous charge combustion condition which requires homogeneous charge combustion and a stratified charge combustion condition which requires stratified charge combustion, in accordance with an engine operating condition, fuel being supplied on intake stroke so as to form a rich equivalent ratio in the homogeneous charge combustion, fuel being supplied on compression stroke so as to form a lean equivalent ratio in the stratified charge combustion, the rich equivalent ratio being richer in fuel than the lean equivalent ratio; (b) gradually changing over an equivalent ratio within a range between the rich and lean equivalent ratios when engine operation is changed over between the homogeneous charge combustion condition and the stratified charge combustion condition; and (c) injecting first and second quantities of fuel into a cylinder of the engine respectively on intake and compression strokes in each cycle of the cylinder at least a predetermined time during a time period in which the equivalent ratio is gradually changed over.

An automatic stoppage and restart of a motor vehicle engine is conducted when the vehicle is standstill in normal traffic for fuel conservation and reduction of toxic emissions. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, the automatic stoppage of the engine is prohibited for vehicle battery energy conservation to avoid occurrence of situation where repeated engine stoppage and restart might cause a considerable reduction in the charging level of the vehicle battery. According to the first preferred implementation of the present invention, traffic information obtained through vehicle navigation system is used to determine whether a vehicle is on a congested roadway. According to the second preferred implementation of the present invention, vehicle speed is used to evaluate the pattern of traveling of a vehicle to determine whether or not the vehicle is in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

An automotive vehicle with an automatic stop-restart system of an internal combustion engine, has a sensor sensing a rotational speed of the engine, and a motor generator coupled to an engine for rotation synchronously with the engine, and cranking the engine in response to a command needed to initiate a cranking cycle by a motoring operation of the motor generator, and subjected to a rotational speed feedback control after the rotational speed of the engine reaches a predetermined speed. The motor generator is capable of operating in a power-running mode to automatically restart the engine by the motoring torque and operating in a regenerative mode for energy regeneration. Also provided is a controller capable of executing an automatic engine-stop mode at which the engine is automatically stopped by fuel cutoff, and generating the command for an automatic engine-restart operating mode at which the engine is cranked by the motoring operation and then started up by initiating timely a fuel-injection operation after initiation of the rotational speed feedback control. The controller includes a combustion-stability decision section determining whether the engine is in a stable combustion state, and a feedback gain switching section switching a feedback gain for the rotational speed feedback control between high and low feedback gains, depending upon a combustion state of the engine.

In an automatic stop-restart system of an automotive internal combustion engine mated to an automatic transmission which uses either one of a torque converter and a start-up clutch for engine torque transmission to axle shafts of driven wheels of an automotive vehicle, a motor generator is disposed between the engine and the automatic transmission. The motor generator is capable of operating in a power-running mode to automatically restart the engine by a motoring torque produced by its motoring operation during the start-up period and operating in a regenerative mode for energy regeneration. A control unit of the system has a first control section performing a rotational speed control for the motor generator by setting a desired rotational speed at a predetermined idle speed so that the engine speed is brought closer to the desired speed during an automatic engine-restart operating mode. The control unit has a second control section setting a regenerative torque limiter which limits a regenerative torque of the motor generator to a controllable specified torque level, while executing the rotational speed control when the accelerator pedal is depressed during the automatic engine-restart operating mode.

An automatic engine stop and restart system includes an engine, a starting motor, a transmission, a vehicle operating condition sensor and a controller. The controller monitors the vehicle operating condition to produce an automatic engine restart request signal during an automatic engine stop operation, calculates a target engine speed for the automatic engine restart operation, and drives the motor in accordance with the target speed to perform the automatic engine restart operation in response to the engine restart request signal. During the automatic engine restart operation, the transmission is held in a drive state or in a non-drive state invariably.
