A method for starting an engine (2) of a vehicle having a hybrid transmission (1) is provided. The hybrid transmission (1) is capable of providing motor running under a power of an electric motor (MG1, MG2) only and hybrid running under a power of both of the engine (2) and the electric motor (MG1, MG2). The power of the engine (2) is supplied to the hybrid transmission (1) by way of a clutch (3). The method includes, when the clutch (3) is engaged for starting the engine (2) during the motor running, issuing an engine start instruction when an engine speed (Ne) increases to a startable speed (Nig) with the progress of engagement of the clutch (3), and after the moment (t2) of issue of the engine start instruction, restricting increase of an engagement force of the clutch (3) and thereby suppressing the progress of engagement of the clutch (3). An apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.

An automotive vehicle with an automatic stop-restart system of an internal combustion engine, has a sensor sensing a rotational speed of the engine, and a motor generator coupled to an engine for rotation synchronously with the engine, and cranking the engine in response to a command needed to initiate a cranking cycle by a motoring operation of the motor generator, and subjected to a rotational speed feedback control after the rotational speed of the engine reaches a predetermined speed. The motor generator is capable of operating in a power-running mode to automatically restart the engine by the motoring torque and operating in a regenerative mode for energy regeneration. Also provided is a controller capable of executing an automatic engine-stop mode at which the engine is automatically stopped by fuel cutoff, and generating the command for an automatic engine-restart operating mode at which the engine is cranked by the motoring operation and then started up by initiating timely a fuel-injection operation after initiation of the rotational speed feedback control. The controller includes a combustion-stability decision section determining whether the engine is in a stable combustion state, and a feedback gain switching section switching a feedback gain for the rotational speed feedback control between high and low feedback gains, depending upon a combustion state of the engine.
