A tool-holder for a milling machine is composed of a first rotating portion (2) with a coupler (3) attachable to a spindle drive shaft of the machine, a second rotating portion (4) turning as one with the first portion (2) and equipped with a chuck (5) to hold a tool (U), and a mechanism (19) designed to detect undulations (O) on a surface (Sr) being milled. The second rotating portion (4) is capable of axial movement relative to the first rotating portion (2), so that when the tool-holder (1) is traversed along a prescribed trajectory referable to a nominal surface (Si), the undulations (O) on the actual surface (Sr) of the panel and the extent of their deviation from the nominal surface (Si) can be sensed and quantified through the agency of the detection mechanism (19), and a corresponding axial movement induced in the second portion (4) of the tool-holder (1) to compensate the variation and maintain a constant milling depth, thereby improving the quality of finish-milling operations on technological materials such as panels of carbon fibre composite.

Described is a spindle mounting head of a machine tool comprising a supporting body (4) with transversal dimensions (d), internally hollow and having an inner surface (5), and connected to the machine (1) at a first end (6); a hollow spindle (8) connected to the supporting body (4), a tool holder shaft (9) passing through the spindle (8) and movable, along a second axis (Z), between a first non-operating configuration, wherein the shaft (9) is stationary and retracted inside the supporting body (4), and at least a second operating configuration, wherein the shaft (9) is placed in rotation and moved along the second axis (Z) outside the supporting body (4). Moreover, the head (3) comprises first first motor means (11), connected to the supporting body (4), for rotating the hollow spindle (8) and the tool holder shaft (9) and second motor means (12) connected to the tool holder shaft (9) for linearly moving the latter along the second axis (Z). The second motor means (12) have a relative third axis (W) of motion transmission connected to the tool holder shaft (9). The second motor means are located inside the transversal dimensions (d) of the supporting body (4).
