Process of preparing particulate cereal grain containing at least one additive, which can be subsequently cooked for human consumption. The particulate cereal grain, which may be infested with insects, is treated in centrifugal impact milling apparatus. The centrifugal impact milling apparatus has a casing and a rotor rotatably mounted in the casing. The rotatable rotor is rotated at a peripheral velocity which is sufficient to cause destruction of the insect infestation in the particulate cereal grain by impelling by centrifugal force the particulate cereal grain in contact with the peripheral region of the rotor against the inner wall of the casing and/or impactors located inside of the casing but the centrifugal force is of such a magnitude as not to significantly decrease the particle range profile of the particulate cereal grain. The particulate cereal grain is removed from the centrifugal impact milling apparatus and the particulate cereal grain is mixed with at least one edible additive.

Nuts (peanuts, cashews, etc.) having desirable eye appeal, excellent taste and good storage stability are prepared by coating raw nuts with an adhesive solution containing honey, followed by a coating of powdered sugar, roasting the coated nuts, preferably in oil, and then applying a coating of a dry mixture of sugar and salt. The adhesive solution employed in the initial coating step preferably comprises a mixture of honey, corn syrup, sucrose, carbohydrate gum and water. The final coating is tightly adherent after roasting. A method of operating the process on a continuous basis is also described.

A flat sheet comprising a layer of fat sandwiched between two layers of dough is produced using a coextrusion die (44) having two slot-like orifices (86, 88). In order to avoid distortion of the sheet due to the dough leaving the center portion of the outer slot-like orifice more quickly than the end portions thereof, multiple augers (42, 52) or other drive means are used and the drive means which drive the dough through the end portions of the orifice (42-1-42-9, 52-1, 52-9) operate more quickly than those which drive the dough through the center portion of the orifice. The coextruded sheet may be laminated, rolled and cut to form multi-layered bakery products.
