Small crystals are made by mixing a solution of a desired substance with an anti-solvent in a fluidic vortex mixer in which the residence time is less than 1 s, for example 10 ms. The liquid within the fluidic vortex mixer ( 12 ) is subjected to high intensity ultrasound from a transducer ( 20, 22 ) in or on the wall of the mixer, or coupled to a pipe supplying liquid to the mixer. The solution very rapidly becomes supersaturated, and the ultrasound can induce a very large number of nuclei for crystal growth. Small crystals, for example less than 5 mum, are formed that may be of a suitable size for use in inhalers.

Procédé de solidification d'un liquide consistant à faire descendre la température du liquide en-dessous de son point de congélation et à soumettre le liquide à une perturbation physique, de préférence à irradier le liquide surrefroidi ou partiellement solidifié avec des ultrasons pour maîtriser la nucléation et/ou la cristallogénèse. La fréquence préférée pour les ultrasons est comprise dans la plage 16-100 kHz. La fréquence idéale étant de 20-40 kHz. Selon un mode de réalisation de la présente invention, les liquides surrefroidis sont irradiés à une température pouvant aller jusqu'à 1 °C en-dessous de leur point de congélation pour induire la formation de gros cristaux (500 microns) dans le produit solidifié. Selon un autre mode de réalisation, les liquides partiellement solidifiés sont irradiés à une température plus basse que leur point de congélation de façon à induire la formation de plusieurs petits cristaux (50 microns) dans le produit solidifié. Les dispositifs servant à mettre en oeuvre les procédés présentés sont également décrits.
