Nonwoven webs for use as the surge layer of personal care articles are provided. The webs include a first, binder fiber, which is a biodegradable thermoplastic fiber that does not undergo severe heat shrinkage. The webs further include a second fiber which is a biodegradable, thermoplastic fiber. The first and second fibers are combined to form a web that has a moderate permeability, in the range of 500 to 1500 mu m , and a high void volume, greater than 25 cm /g.

The second fiber component is selected such that it supports the first fiber component during burning, optionally including an inorganic filler as a coating for the first and second fiber components. In alternative embodiment, the present invention provides a fire blocking non-woven textile structure containing the above first and second fiber components, blended with a third binder fiber component in the form of a vertically lapped nonwoven structure.

The present invention also provides methods of treating or contacting substrates chosen from a non-woven, woven and a composite, such as glass fiber substrates, with the thermosetting aqueous binder compositions, and drying and curing, and the water resistant products produced thereby.

The multilayer nonwoven composite comprises a first layer comprising 75 to 25 weight percent regenerated cellulosic fiber that retains at least 10 percent of its fiber weight when heated in air to 700°C at a rate of 20 degrees C per minute and 25 to 75 weight percent heat-resistant fiber, said first layer having a basis weight of from 1 to 5 ounces per square yard (34 to 170 grams per square meter); and a second layer comprising up to 75 weight percent of a regenerated cellulosic fiber that retains at least 10 percent of its fiber weight when heated in air to 700°C at a rate of 20 degrees C per minute, and 25 to 100 weight percent of a modacrylic fiber, said second layer having a basis weight of from 1 to 5 ounces per square yard (34 to 170 grams per square meter), the nonwoven composite having a total basis weight of from 2 to 7 ounces per square yard (68 to 237 grams per square meter).

The invention concerns a method and an installation for producing a spunbonded fabric, characterised in that it consists in: producing a spunbonded lap (5) against the surface of which is delivered at least a web (V1 and/or V2) of discontinuous fibres, obtained by carding. The formed complex is compacted by pressing and is continuously transferred onto a line (10) for water jet binding treatment, driving the fibres in the direction of thickness, the fibres which are bound together like a splice between and around the continuous filaments while remaining visible at the surface. After drying, the final product is obtained.
