A functional carpet suitable for use in an automotive vehicle comprises a nonwoven fabric having piles formed throughout a whole surface of the nonwoven fabric. Each pile projects from the surface of the nonwoven fabric and is formed of at least a part of fibers constituting the nonwoven fabric. Each pile has a length ranging from 1 to 10 mm. The nonwoven fabric has a density ranging from 250 to 800 g/m 2 . Additionally, a fluoroplastics is adhered to a surface portion of the nonwoven fabric and extends substantially uniformly throughout the surface of the nonwoven fabric. The fluoroplastics includes linear tetrafluoroethylene telomer as a main body. The tetrafluoroethylene telomer has a number of carbon atoms ranging from 6 to 14. The amount of the fluoroplastics adhered to the surface portion of the nonwoven fabric ranges from 1.5 to 60 g/m 2 in solid state.

The static dissipative polyurethane backings are prepared from formulations including a polyisocyanate, a polyol and a conductivity inducing agent which is a non-volatile metal salt of a fluoroalkyl sulfonic acid. The antistatic textiles are particularly useful as antistatic floor coverings.

A carpet product (10) includes a pile fabric layer (20), a stabilizing layer (30) adhered to the back of the pile fabric layer (20) to provide dimensional stability against concentrated stresses exerted against the upper surface of the carpet and a balancing layer (40) disposed below the stabilizing layer (30) which has thermal response and moisture absorption characteristics selected for compatibility with the pile fabric layer (20). When the carpet product (10) is exposed to temperature extremes or changes in ambient humidity, stresses exerted by the expansion or contraction of the pile fabric layer (20) create a bending moment around the stabilizing layer (30). However, the balancing layer (40) creates comparable stresses on the lower side of the stabilizing layer (30) and exerts an equal-but-opposite bending moment which balances the moment exerted by the pile fabric layer (20). The resulting carpet product exhibits enhanced flatness and floor hugging characteristics when subjected to temperature extremes or changes in the ambient humidity.

The process is suitable for applying impermeable surfaces to non wovens, and foam backed carpet.

A layer of adhesive is formed on a rotating coating roll, and the upper edge of an applicator blade is brought into contact with the coated roll. The layer of adhesive is transferred to the upper edge of the applicator blade and flows under the effect of gravity to the lower edge of the blade. The back of the carpet is then pressed against the lower edge of the blade, simultaneously applying and spreading the adhesive.
