The spring (16) is arranged to apply a return force to the piston (12) and the rate of return of the piston (12) is controlled by the return flow of fluid through the passageway (42). A pneumatic system (100) includes a device (10) connected between first and second members (58, 58a) of a building, such as a door and door frame. The pneumatic system comprises a source of compressed gas (C) for operating the device (10) to enable the device (10) to move the first member (58) relative to the second member (58a), i.e. to open and close the door. A switching device (72) controls the supply of compressed gas to the device (10).

The flexible drive loop is driven by a bi-directional drive unit (48) that includes a reversible electric motor (49), an electromagnetic clutch (52) and a drive wheel (50) that engages the flexible drive loop. The flexible drive loop may be a drive cable (56), a drive tape(58), or a drive chain (46) or a combination of cable, tape and/or chain.

The transmission is thereby capable of being driven in reverse, so that a manual actuation of the sliding door of a motor vehicle is possible, without the requirement for a releasable clutch device between the sliding door and the drive apparatus.
