A tunnel boring machine for controlled boring of an elongated curvilinear tunnel in earthen strata. The tunnel boring machine comprises: cutting means for engaging the tunnel face and removing material therefrom to elongate the tunnel during a cutting strocke; elongated body means for supporting various machine components; elongate thrust arm means for urging the cutting means against the tunnel face during a cutting stroke and for advancing the elongated body means along the tunnel between cutting strokes, the thrust arm means being extendable and retractable from the body means along a thrust arm axis coaxial a machine longitudinal axis; forward lateral positioning means operably mounted on a forward portion of the body means for selectively controlling the lateral positioning of a forward portion of the body means within the tunnel; rear lateral positioning means operably mounted on a rear portion of the body means for selectively controlling the lateral positioning of the rear portion of the body means within the tunnel; forward transverse positioning means operably mounted on a forward portion of the body means for selectively controlling the transverse positioning of a forward portion of the body means within the tunnel; rear transverse positioning means operably mounted on a rear portion of the body means for selectively controlling the transverse positioning of the body means within the tunnel; whereby the machine longitudinal axis is selectively transversely and/or laterally positionable relative the longitudinal axis of the tunnel through the use of the forward and rear lateral positioning means and the forward and rear transverse positioning means; and tunnel gripping means operably mounted on the body means for selectively grippingly engaging the peripheral sidewall of the tunnel to prevent rearward movement of the body means during a cutting stroke. Various methods of operation of the machine are described.

A main frame for a rotary cutterhead of an earth boring machine, has an annular beam (30) by which the cutterhead (20) is mounted onto the earth boring machine for rotation. The frame has a central hub structure (26) disposed forwardly of the annular beam (30); and connected thereto by a plurality of radial spoke beams (28). The spoke beams (28) extend rearwardly and radially outwardly form the hub structure (26) to the annular beam (30) thus making the main frame generally dome shaped. Cutters supported on the spoke beams (28) can be serviced manually from within dome-shaped frame.

A machine for boring tunnels comprises concentric outer and inner sleeves (2, 4) between the forward extents of which is defined an annular housing (6). A spiral auger (8) extends axially through the inner sleeve (4) and carries at its forward end a primary cutting head (10), while an annular secondary cutting head (14) is mounted in the annular housing (6) and is rotatable about the central axis of the sleeves (2, 4) on rotation of the auger (8). A series of steering plates (20) are spaced circumferentially about the forward extent of the outer sleeve (2) and are pivotal outwardly of said sleeve (2) on actuation of associated control members (22) to control the direction of movement of the machine on thrusting of said machine through the ground by an associated thrust mechanism reacting against the rear ends of the sleeves (2, 4) and providing power for rotating the auger (8) and associated cutting head (10,14).

Die Erfindung befaßt sich mit dem Problem, eine Vortriebsmaschine zum maschinellen Auffahren von Tun neln und Strecken im Vollschnittverfahren zu schaffen, die in vorteilhafter Weise in gebrächem und nachbrüchigem Gebir ge bzw. zur Durchörterung geologischer Störungen einsetz bar ist. Bekannte Maschinen sind bereits mit äußerst flachen - gegenüber früher konischen - Bohrköpfen ausgestattet, um eine entsprechend vertikale Ortsbrust mit größstmoglicher Stabilität des Gesteinsverbandes zu erstellen. Trotzdem treten nach wie vor Schwierigkeiten durch Kollabieren der Ortsbrust und des Hangenden auf. Zur Lösung des Problems schlägt die vorliegende Erfindung vor, die Drehebene des Bohrkopfes (2) der Vortriebsmaschine in Vortriebsrichtung geneigt anzuordnen, wobei die Drehachse des Bohrkopfes (2) mit der Tunnel - bzw. Streckenlängsachse in senkrechter Ebene einen Winkel zwischen 20 und 50, vorzugsweise 30 und 45° schließt. Gegebenenfalls kann der durch den geneig ten Bohrkopf (2) gebildete Bereich der Ortsbrust-Böschung durch einen das Hangende stützenden Schild (10) gesichert sein.
